Interesting. Surprisingly high percentage of the long recovery ones (28+ days) get long covid :/
And for completeness sake - this is the page it is used in: (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_COVID)
Why "surprising" ?
Long COVID=residual deranged inflammation-driven issues.
And deranged inflammation is what you get when the immune system is not efficient (that's producing "long recovery" times).
SARS-Cov-2 infecton is just the first step of a system-wide condition known as "COVID". You can still be (very) sick with virtually no virus left in the body.

Hmm, I always wondered if hypoxia had something to do with it, since they found COVID can cause dangerously low oxygen levels without people noticing. That can't be doing the body any good

The consistent factors I've seen in the long covid support groups (not to mention my own case) is sensory mayhem & dysautonomia, both of which have a neural basis. So I always figured it was the virus directly invading the systems that mediate those things.
So, e.g., you can expect every sensory organ to be off ... loss of or change in taste and smell, crazy sensitivity to brightness and pitch, tinnitus, other vision and hearing issues, crazy itchy skin, phantom poking (I never did figure out how to properly translate this into Japanese, which led to a very confused cardiologist, especially when I said the poking would move around)... And then things to do with your autonomic system going haywire ... especially tachycardia, i.e., fast heart beat, which is actually the most common symptom in the surveys by far, sometimes coupled with arrhythmia, brain fog, then there are changes in feelings of hunger & sleep, crazy vertigo and dizziness, etc.
It's a really mixed bag, but the profile is still surprisingly consistent.

Viruses can't really choose where to go - they require specific proteins to gain access to specific cell types (in COVID-19's case, it uses its spike protein to access cells via ACE2 and proteases: (
https://www.pnas.org/content/117/21/11727)). It's also highly unlikely that this type of virus could
pull a herpes and hide out in cells - viruses tend to be very specialised - this one survives by high transmissibility (respiratory viruses, in general, are so successful as coughing & sneezing are great modes of transmission), so probably won't need to have also evolved a separate function to remain dormant within hosts until the time is right.
EDIT: See Lowenz's post below - looks like some neuro cells have sufficient ACE2 expression to be at least be infected. My money was on long COVID being some kind of chronic low-level inflammatory disease (like mild vasculitis or something - which aligns with all of the cardiovascular complications the Kawasaki-like presentation which is affecting some children), so this is pretty interesting and also scary since hypoxia is nothing to fuck with.
Are your groups mostly led by sufferers? If so, I would take with a huge grain of salt any conclusions which aren't a direct reference to peer-reviewed studies and which don't take careful steps to avoid cherry-picking. There is just no way that affected parties can be unbiased enough.

It's like with vasculitis - if it needs blood supply to function correctly, then a virus that targets epithelium (and by extension, long-lasting inflammatory effects at those sites) can likely cause a common pool of very diverse symptoms.
Disclaimer: I'm neither a physician nor a virologist, (am a former immunologist (human & mouse)); however, in terms of literature search and a general understanding of medicine, it can be considered relatively educated. If someone with more subject-focused knowledge steps in, I'll happily defer.

Mine too (as I've always said since the beginning because here in Bergamo we've been doing autopsies since May 2020). But glia tissue is another interesting road to explore.

A leading figure in the QAnon conspiracy movement who said that only “idiots” get vaccinated has died of Covid-19.
Cirsten Weldon, who had tens of thousands of followers on right-wing social media networks, used her influence to drive people away from vaccines. She was a vocal critic of coronavirus mitigation efforts and at one point said that Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, “needs to be hung from a rope”.
The Daily Beast reports that in one video, Ms Weldon harassed people waiting in line to get the coronavirus vaccine.
“The vaccines kill, don't get it!” she yelled in the video. “This is how gullible these idiots are. They're all getting vaccine!”
Ms Weldon began showing symptoms that she had been infected by Covid-19 in late December. Her final video shows her coughing and struggling to get through a rant about patriots overthrowing the US government. During the video she complained that she was exhausted.
She was admitted to the hospital three days after the video was posted. During her stay at the California hospital she posted photos of herself wearing an oxygen mask, claiming she had a “bacterial pneumonia”.
In one post to the social network Telegram, she said she had refused to take “Dr Fauci's Remdesivir”.
On Friday, it was revealed that she had died.
[...]
Some of Ms Weldon's QAnon friends and followers threatened violent retaliation against the hospital staff that treated her. One individual, Scott McKay, who goes by the online handle “Patriot Streetfighter”, said the medical staff should be sentenced to death by military tribunal, lest they be killed in the street by vigilantes.
“If it's not done in a military tribunal then it's going to be done in the street eventually and not to my wishes,” Mr McKay wrote. “That's my greatest fear. But if it's necessary, it's going to be necessary.”

Also, one of the "anthrax attack victims" died of COVID:

A QAnon and anti-vaccine podcaster has died from complications due to COVID-19 after contracting the virus at a conspiracy theory conference that turned into a superspreader event, and where fellow attendees baselessly blamed their illness on an anthrax attack.
Doug Kuzma, 61, from Newport News, Virginia, died on January 3 after being hospitalized 10 days earlier. Kuzma broadcasted on the FROG News podcasting network, which stands for “Fully Rely On God.” Kuzma and his FROG fellow hosts pushed an array of conspiracy theories ranging from QAnon to COVID denial and election fraud lies.
Kuzma attended the ReAwaken America conference in Dallas on the weekend of Dec. 11, posting a picture of his media pass on his Facebook page. Other images Kuzma posted from the conference show large crowds in confined spaces without any social distancing or masks.
“Podcaster room overrun with people. Chaos,” Kuzma commented under one picture.
The conspiracy-laden event, organized by Tulsa businessman Clay Clark, was headlined by the likes of disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and former President Donald Trump's son Eric.
After the event, several unvaccinated conspiracy theorists and election fraud promoters claimed baselessly that they'd been targeted by a biological weapon such as anthrax.
Kuzma reported that he was feeling ill, but claimed it was just his chronic bronchitis flaring up again. On December 15 he posted on Facebook that he had a fever and said it was time to call the doctor.
Someone commented that he should get a COVID test anyway, but Kuzma responded: “No way.” When the commenter said it was better to be “safe than sorry,” Kuzma once again lashed out, writing: “You must have lost your mind, so they can kill me, and try and give me the jab. I'll die at the house before I go to the hospital.”
However, after suffering from a fever for five days straight, Kuzma was forced to admit that he had likely contracted COVID.
He was reportedly found unconscious at his house on Christmas Eve and rushed to the hospital. Pro-Trump lawyer Lin Wood posted on Telegram that Kuzma was brought to the Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital ICU in Newport News and was not responding to treatment. Kuzma was sedated and placed on a ventilator, according to a post by his podcast network.
According to a fellow member of FROG News, the final message Kuzma sent was a photo of himself with a “refill of ivermectin.”
