Hmm... How's that privately run health care working out for you right now?
jkcerda on 13/3/2020 at 20:23

Um... didn't your government just say that you have millions of tests now and everyone who wants it can get tested?
Yes
sigh...

So it's better to just put up a financial barrier and let people die when they can't afford treatment?
Also, I bet nobody in Italy is walking into a hospital and getting billed 10k for not being able to get tested.

WELL, DRs there are deciding who gets treatment if any at all. so they don't get a bill and they obviously don't get the treatment either.

Do you not understand what a triage is?
Also, would you care to explain to me how this is the consequence of having socialised medicine?
jkcerda on 13/3/2020 at 20:46
do you get that people are dying w/o any medical help because a DR decided your life was not worth it ?
personally we should have BOTH, UHC AND a good private option. putting all your eggs in one basket means you are fucked when others make the decision for you.

the sky is falling.....................we could have millions infected and death rate is still under 5k..................
Remember when it was just a few people in China? Remember when it was just a dozen people across the world? Remember when it was just 17 people in the US? Remember when it...
Though this does show us the weakness of socialized medicine, in that it can only be as efficient as the people running it. If you have dipshits in office who don't know what they're doing, we're all going to suffer for it. Though the current situation hasn't exactly acquitted our highly privatized healthcare system, which is only as efficient as what our insurance companies are willing to pay for.
Basically, arguing the usual left right issues for how coronavirus has been handled is a moot point, because every system has shown a point of failure you can jab your finger at, and say "see, if we had this, it would've been better!"
Though if you want to point towards the successes of universal healthcare in handling the situation, just look at Singapore and South Korea, who are dealing with it swimmingly.
...so I guess the real issue here isn't the system X or Y is working under, but rather who we fucking vote for to handle this shit.

I do get that people are dying because there are not enough resources. How is this the doctors' fault?

121 tests out of 1.4M residents.
Hm. Our per capita is ~4 times higher (Estonia, ~1.3 pop) however, our positive rate is also higher (ie. there will likely be more cases prompting a test) and possibly counting over a longer time-period.
Yesterday totals: 464 tests done with 17 positives (currently has ramped up to 45 tests per day).
Maybe there has not been much need for testing in your state? Ie. one should not waste the COVID tests needlessly - many cases can be pruned by other means (ex: check for probable alternate disease where reasonable). Also, since when have the tests been available there? Either way, a total of 2 positives over 96 tests done sounds terrible as a ratio. Confuddled triage? People panicking? If they panic now - what happens when the shit actually hits the fan?
edit: on second thought ... ours was probably equally low at the start. At least that would make sense.
