Hosting a data center should be a net benefit to the local area and region. Often, it's not. There's a backlash because people didn't know what projects their municipal and state governments were approving and they are now seeing the negatives.

Data centers employ very few skilled workers and few workers in general. They are quick to construct and get operating once the utilities are in place. The construction jobs are transient and filled by people from outside the local community. So they can't be an economic backbone for a community like factories and industrial plants used to be. It's really just a source of tax revenue that has to be weighed against the resources it consumes and the noise & heat pollution it creates.

Data center development will be a global race to the bottom. The development of cloud computing technology has turned computing resources and data storage into fungible commodities. Data and processing workloads can move overnight to wherever in the world there is capacity, or wherever the capacity is cheaper.

Computing technology becomes obsolete fast. Equipment that is state of the art today will be due for a technology refresh in just 5 years or so. At that point, clients will be reconsidering whether upgrading the equipment in your data center is worth the cost, and if you're not cost competitive they will go somewhere else.

There is also the possibility that a computing technology breakthrough or future trend could dramatically reduce the need for data center space, power, and cooling.

For these reasons, data centers are not good long term investments. Right now, the spike in demand from AI exceeds the supply, so every data center is economically viable. But sometime in the future the imbalance will end. If you're not located in an area with cheap electricity and high bandwidth/low latency connectivity to the internet, your data center could turn into a white elephant once the initial client contracts are up.

I think it's more likely that mounting failures have made him crack and he's behaving like an addict in a downward spiral lashing out at friends and family.
