Putin is a planner and a weigher.
One would expect the calculating type to be more careful with assessing his chances to conquer a sizeable country with an army that was five times smaller than necessary. I think you're falling for one of the media stories that
lowenz refers to.

That he's in fact his own mouthpiece and cock-holster?

Media story in what sense? The US media way to tell people the reality?
Or this:
(
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izborsky_Club)
is no "media story" :D
But I don't think a lot of people in Russia know about russian elites think tanks.
Just to remember.....
On June 14, 2014, in Donetsk, on the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, a branch of the Izborsky Club, the Izborsky Club of Novorossiya [ru] was opened and its first meeting was held, attended by Miroslav Rudenko [ru], Andrey Purgin, Pavel Gubarev, Dmitry Muza, Sergey Baryshnikov, Father Iona (Kovalev) and Kirill Cherkashin. The public figure of the Donetsk People's Republic, Pavel Gubarev, said that "The club will include well-known experts, doctors of science, candidates of science who will help solve the state problems of Novorossia".[17] Donetsk historian Artyom Olkhin was elected as the executive secretary of the club. According to Gubarev, initiative to create belonged to the head of the Izborsky club, Alexander ProkhanovMaidan, Zelensky, Minsk agreements or whatever are NOT the cause of the war.
The cause is the good old irredentism of imperial Russia, reclaiming its subjects.

In this sense:

The problem with American politics is that everything is transformed into a "story" when it comes to explaing something to the people

They're more like "antifreemansonry", it's why they love to make friends with actual fascists (here in Italy): to "fight globalist satanic freemasons"
Not that the "basic" fascist is more than a brute and fully understand this kind of things, but the "minds" (of course they call themselves only "patriots") do.....they really can't understand they provide more power to power, feeding this kind of escatological mythology, and "liberate" no one......

I have no idea what media lowenz watches. I do think Putin was surprised his elite forces were not more enthusiastic but even they knew what a lie the invasion was. I think everyone was surprised at the fight Ukraine put up and not just Putin. I'm proud of them.
It would be a damn shame for Trump to be reelected and ruin their defense by cutting support so that his buddy Putin stands a chance after all that has been sacrificed to send the invaders home.

So the US forces EU countries to cut ties with Russia, and they (Russia) cut them the oil supply, making EU countries to buy oil to the US at a bigger price, smart move by the US.

I was reading yesterday about Gorbachev, and came about a part that mentioned that the USSR took Crimea from Russia in 1954 and gave it to Ukraine.
So I guess they do have some claims to that part of land.

NO, we're still buying *GAS* (no oil, it never was important) indirectly from Russia, that's the problem.
And US enterprises continue to sell to Russia every kind of materials, just indirectly.
You think too much high of US government power in routing&controlling trade.
Just see how nVidia still sells AI accelerators in China
