They claim that neither a conviction for insurrection or even an indictment is necessary to invoke and apply the 14th, in this case.

At this point in time I'm surprised people are still paying attention to Trump even if he's still in the news. I only ever think about him and his exploits when I see this thread and I have no idea what is even going on with him right now.

The things you need to know are that he's almost sure to get the nomination to be the GOP candidate for president in the next election, he's been criminally indicted three times (illegally paying Stormy Daniels hush money, keeping classified documents and obstructing their return, conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election) and the fourth (interfering with Georgia's election process) is on its way, and I think at least the last three are slam dunk convictions short of some stupid deus ex machina.
One of the main issues is none of the cases is going to reach its conclusion before the 2024 election, so there's a non-zero chance a likely felon is going to be elected as the next president. Right now there's an effort by some to try to disqualify Trump under the 14th Amendment's clause barring people who engaged in or gave aid to those engaging in insurrection against the US from running for high office (originally targeting Civil War vets), and I think they have a pretty good argument, which I think captures where we are now.
I'm sure people that don't like him just want him to just disappear, but the risk of him as president again is what forces people to have to pay attention, if only to prepare themselves for the fresh new hell that may be coming.
