Sooo, back when Trump was claiming that he wanted to release his tax returns but couldn't because they were under audit? Setting aside the fact that being audited in no way prevents him from releasing them, he wasn't being audited, and the reason he wasn't undergoing the mandatory presidential audit was because one of his appointees to the IRS shut it down until a whistleblower told Congress.

I remember there was some partial leak of his past taxes a few years ago, and his statement at the time was something like he was shocked and upset about the leak and wanted to know who did it. But the results made him look really good, so maybe it was good that they were leaked anyway; he doesn't know... something that made it really transparent that he'd leaked them himself to take pressure off of the more recent returns which he was still withholding.
The guy is such a pathetically open book more often than not. It's a wonder he casts such a spell on morons the way he does.

He isn't casting much of a spell anymore. Even QAnon folks see the corruption and mental illness now. Around me, the last of the homes flying Trump flags have taken them down in recent weeks. But they still have their Let's Go Brandon flags waving, so it's a sign that Trump's base is moving on.
In 2016, there were still a lot of people angry about the causes and responses to the great recession. Trump tapped into their hunger for revenge against the people and systems responsible for it. So did Bernie Sanders. There were people who crossed over from one to the other, which tells you that most of the country wasn't thinking about policy, they were looking for somebody who would disrupt things and champion the working class.
Anyway, somebody gave 18 years of Trump's returns to the New York Times. It was during the 2020 campaign, so it was kind of lost in the noise. I can't be bothered to circumvent the paywall to look at it again, but I recall he paid no taxes most years and owed the Treasury about $400M. I don't think he cares whether people find out that he's a cheat, he cares if people find out he's not as rich as he claims he is.

Greene and Boebart joined 26 other House Republicans to vote against the bipartisan Respect for Child Survivors Act, which overwhelmingly passed out of the House anyway and will address how the FBI has historically mishandled child sexual abuse cases. The bill will create specific teams within the FBI to support child victims and investigate child sexual abuse, trafficking, and child abuse content.
The whole "won't anyone think of the children" "you're all groomers" bloc of the GOP were the lone holdouts who voted against this bill.

That's not even on the level of "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?", though.

Well he doesn't know what a Marxist is, if he thinks that the Capitol is crawling with them.

That's probably why they often couch that as "cultural Marxists":
(
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Marxism_conspiracy_theory)
Quote:
The term "Cultural Marxism" refers to a far-right antisemitic conspiracy theory which claims that Western Marxism is the basis of continuing academic and intellectual efforts to subvert Western culture. The conspiracy theory misrepresents the Frankfurt School as being responsible for modern progressive movements, identity politics, and political correctness, claiming there is an ongoing and intentional subversion of Western society via a planned culture war that undermines the Christian values of traditionalist conservatism and seeks to replace them with the culturally liberal values of the 1960s.
Although similarities with the Nazi propaganda term "Cultural Bolshevism" have been noted, the contemporary conspiracy theory originated in the United States during the 1990s. Originally found only on the far-right political fringe, the term began to enter mainstream discourse in the 2010s and is now found globally. The conspiracy theory of a Marxist culture war is promoted by right-wing politicians, fundamentalist religious leaders, political commentators in mainstream print and television media, and white supremacist terrorists, and has been described as "a foundational element of the alt-right worldview". Scholarly analysis of the conspiracy theory has concluded that it has no basis in fact.
Quote:
In a speech to the Conservative Leadership Conference of the Civitas Institute in 1998,[14] Paul Weyrich equated Cultural Marxism to political correctness
So to get that straight, a Marxist is someone who follows Marx's writings. But a "Cultural Marxist" is someone who doesn't say the n-word or go around getting upset about the gays.

Huh, never knew I was a Marxist, but okay.
