We must stop him from Making America Great Again, because we love what America has become since he's been gone!...

Kind of low energy. Oh well, he's getting on in years, after all.

If the US were a primetime drama, WHICH IT IS, then the midterms would've been the mid-season twist none of us were expecting, making Trump's inevitable reelection campaign so much more interesting in contrast.

He's stale and damaged goods and there is no way he's going to get the nomination. But will he finally accept defeat, or will he make an independent run and split the vote?
Vae, would you really vote for him again as an independent candidate?

So, the US midterm elections have been all but decided, with only a couple of stragglers left, and as a result the Democrats are keeping the Senate and Republicans managed to win the House with possibly a few more seats to spare.
I didn't pay too much attention to it, since there's a bit of a war going on in Europe, but I had also kind of figured that Democrats would lose. The electoral map heavily favoured Republicans due to the 2021 redistricting and historical trends. Also, the inflation, high gas prices, and Brandon's low approval ratings didn't seem to bode well for Democrats.
As for why this didn't translate into a massive red wave, it seems that the brilliant strategy of trying to convince their voters that the voting is rigged, but... come vote anyway didn't actually work out so well for the red wave enthusiasts. Neither did running terrible candidates from dog killers to open antisemites to newfound werewolf enthusiasts who don't want to be vampires any more. And, of course, there was the small issue of taking away people's rights, which apparently a lot of the pundits thought people would somehow forget by the election. And, even before that, they had the brilliant idea to kill off a bunch of their own voters by spreading misinformation about a deadly pandemic that was especially dangerous to their most fervent and active supporters.
In any case, Fox News was not amused, it seems: (

Someone crunched the numbers on that:
(
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/covid-death-rates-higher-republicans-democrats-why-rcna50883)
Quote:
Average excess death rates in Florida and Ohio were 76% higher among Republicans than Democrats from March 2020 to December 2021, according to a working paper released last month by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Excess deaths refers to deaths above what would be anticipated based on historical trends.
This means over a quarter of all excess deaths were "extra" Republicans. There's a chance this could have swung some elections if they were closer than a few thousands, and a slight Democratic win.
There was a point where it looked like Lauren Boebert might lose by < 100 votes. If that had happened it would have been very believable that this was within the margin of her own anti-vax position causing her loss. Right now it looks like she won by under 600.

Boebert's case is extra interesting in that was supposed to be a relatively safe seat, from what I understand.

Ooh, a popcorn moment. Elon Musk had a twitter poll on allowing Trump back on, 50%+ said yes, so Musk said Trump's back on.

Donald Trump says he won't be returning to Twitter following poll
Donald Trump says he has no interest in returning to Twitter after Elon Musk vowed to reverse his ban, with it facing “incredible” problems.
Elon is doing an "alpha-male" power play here, graciously "allowing" Trump back onto "his" platform.
Musk then apparently just re-opened Trump's account by himself and that account started to rack up followers.
I don't often agree, but Trump might have made the right call here to ignore the account completely. Accepting it would make it look like he's beholden to Musk, while ignoring it cements his position and will please his Truth Social / DWAC supporters, while leaving Musk in an awkward freeze-frame moment.
