Can you explain? It seems like an anti capitalist, anti time waste sentiment. Which I can get behind.
All these festivals are really money making hamster wheels - Valentines, Mother's Day and Father's Day etc. Cards, presents, over inflated this and that. It's all bollocks really.
I completely agree. I was coming back to edit my previous post. You made me start thinking and those thoughts wandered into whether it was my personal antipathy to Melania that influenced my thinking. I'd taken her comment to indicate complete contempt for the billions of people for whom Christmas was important. I now think that was unfair as I can imagine myself saying something similar. My immediate circle doesn't consist of anyone who sees Christmas as a religious thing and consider it a commercial enterprise which starts far too soon and goes on too long. Some of my more distant family do believe but those physically around me don't. But I wouldn't dump on those who do believe it represents Jesus' birth. And that's what I thought she was doing.
I do think that it's despicable for her so-called friend to release these private comments which don't indicate any kind of crime. So it's possibly two-faced of me to object to them. I shouldn't have known about them in the first place.

Oh? Yeah, if I don't pay attention, it's easy for me to mix gendered pronouns up, since I don't have them internalised, but rather have to make a conscious choice each time. It's especially easy to mix them up if it's a more abstract entity like the author of an article and don't even get me started on anonymous usernames on forums (as if I'm able to keep track of hundreds and hundreds of people's gender). That's why I generally try to avoid them altogether, but it's not always very easy in English.

Yeah, I hate how commercialised all of these are. The ideas behind the events might have been nice, but they've replaced the sentiment with an excuse to sell people things no one actually wants or needs.
I think we're really going to have to crack down on this kind of completely wanton waste at some point, for the sake of our planet. There really is no excuse for buying items that no one wants, just so that they can be looked at once and then thrown away the next day.

Sadly, the general rule on the internet is to assume that everyone is male by default, and you just have to remember the (usually fairly few) exceptions.

Well, when I used to play MUDs and similar online games there always seemed to be lots of women around.

Would a new thread be preferable for a new era of complacent, milquetoast liberalism or are we just going to rename this one? Because I have an idea for a thread title.

I'm gonna leave it open at least while Trump's still in office. After that, we'll see what's what, and go from there.
Though the idea that Trump's political career will go quietly into that good night is a fairly naive one. He has his crowd of diehards to milk for money and attention. Chances are better than good we'll be hearing a lot more from him in the months and years to come.

The thread has already been renamed.
june gloom on 8/11/2020 at 22:25
I guess. It won't be much of a name in about two months, though.
SubJeff on 8/11/2020 at 23:01
It'll still make sense.
What was the new name to be? "Biden his time"?
We should have a new thread for Biden et al if we're going to discuss that. I figure Trump isn't going away even after he's kicked out the White House.
Also - dem vapourware recs? Hmmm?
