https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/21/trump-separation-policy-545-children-parents-still-not-found)
Three years after Donald Trump ordered a crackdown on undocumented migrants crossing into the US, lawyers are still struggling to find the parents of 545 children separated from them under the “zero-tolerance” policy, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
In a court filing, the ACLU said that about two-thirds of the parents had been deported back to the country of origin in Central America, leaving their separated children behind. In the rush to carry out Trump's orders, the locations of the parents were not recorded and three years later they still cannot be found.
The zero-tolerance policy was announced in April 2018. It was later revealed that the administration had begun family separation the previous year under a secret pilot program.
In total, 1,030 children were removed from their parents by the US government under that pilot scheme, of whom 485 children have had their parents found under a scheme imposed by federal judges. The ACLU and a team of lawyers have been tasked by the courts with finding all the parents.
Under the pilot scheme, about 66% of the parents separated from their children were deported back to Central America before the court order was imposed on the Trump administration to find them. The search for the parents, who are called “unreachable” in the court document, has been hampered by the coronavirus pandemic.
Family separation was one of the most visceral results of the Trump administration's ruthless assault on illegal border crossing. The goal of the zero-tolerance policy was to criminally prosecute every migrant who entered the US without authorization - irrespective of the consequences to their families including their children.
[...]
The full horror of the administration's intentions was only disclosed earlier this month when the New York Times reported previously unpublished communications between top officials. Jeff Sessions, then US attorney general, told prosecutors in a conference call in May 2018: “We need to take away children.”
Notes of that call taken by a participant added: “If care about kids, don't bring them in. Won't give amnesty to people with kids.”
The then deputy AG, Rod Rosenstein, told prosecutors at the time that children should be pulled away from their parents no matter how young they were - even if they were infants.
The article doesn't go into it, but another reason (besides incompetence) why some of the parents might be unable to be found is that they are dead. A lot of people from Central and South America are seeking asylum because they face mortal danger in their home countries and a significant number of deported asylum seekers are killed shortly thereafter. And of course, that's not just because of Lord Dampnut's regime -- it was already happening under Obama and even before that, but Lord Dampnut's zero tolerance policy and the efforts of limiting asylum as much as possible have made things much worse.

While I know it got a good amount of reporting, I think there hasn't been near enough outrage about the border camps, the treatment of detainees and these kids, and especially the fact that the kids were detained or separated from their families to begin with.
Generally speaking, I think the US has gotten off the hook for its racist side too much. Not for nothing was the American South's Jim Crow laws and US immigration laws the (
https://crossculturalsolidarity.com/the-american-influence-on-nazi-race-law/) direct inspiration for the Nazi Nuremberg & Immigration laws, and even then, on some points the Jim Crow laws were even more severe and unforgiving than the Nazi race laws (like Jim Crow laws had a "one drop of blood" definition of blackness that even the Nuremberg laws didn't apply to Jewish ancestry). I think a lot of Americans don't appreciate that history much less feel compelled to root it out of the national consciousness. And while it's true most of those laws are gone now, if nothing else this border center fiasco shows their spirit and enclaves of blatant racist laws and policies like this are still very much alive. :erg:

That's truly horrific.
That should be enough to destroy his chances of re-election and get him locked up for life on its own.

We've had four years of the government breaking its own laws in little ways and huge ways and nothing happened. The government is committing nothing short of genocide at the border and nothing happens. The government is indirectly encouraging a kind of genocide by withholding or threatening to withhold disaster/covid aid from blue states, and nothing happens.
Nothing will ever happen. No consequences are forthcoming to most, if not all, of the upper-level administration. They will skate on by, because "democracy" is an empty, meaningless concept that only functions when everyone plays by its rules, and the right-wing no longer even pretends to care about the rules.
The best we can hope for is that Trump loses the election and his evil black heart gives out slamming his 2-liter bottle of Diet Coke while watching the election results.
That or maybe a meteor falling on DC.

It's likely that some are dead. It's also likely that some of them don't want to be found, because they do not want their children to be repatriated. So far, the vast majority of parents that have been found have not been welcomed back into the US to reunite with their children. The government is looking to send the kids back, not bring their parents here.

About the only bright spot this week was the glorious comeuppance of Giuliani, the conspiracy nut supreme, by Borat of all people. I want to say (
https://twitter.com/BoratSagdiyev/status/1319431436550561792) Borat's defense of him is peak 2020, but, hilarious and biting as it is, we still have a few months and I know I would eat my words if I thought that was pushing the envelope. My goodness, some of those comments though... XD

So, watched the second/third debate and it was incredibly boring. Lord Dampnut behaved nearly like a normal person (except for the pathological lying) and Biden was his usual mediocre self, so neither of them really seemed to have an upper hand and neither was particularly entertaining compared to their past performances. In my biased view, Lord Dampnut came over as the more aggressive party and Biden seemed more like someone who had a plan and was more often addressing US people (especially as Lord Dampnut seemed genuinely baffled when Biden was explaining how to reopen businesses safely or what frontline communities are). Lord Dampnut really wanted to talk about Hunter, but he didn't seem to find a good opportunity, so he just threw it in at the race segment, which seemed fairly desperate. Biden made some good arguments, but he didn't really land hard zingers like he did last time, so he seemed a bit underwhelming in comparison. Anyway, here's the few notes I bothered to take. Mostly about Lord Dampnut's crazier/funnier lines, since Biden was his usual boring square this time.
COVID
Lord Dampnut, "Biden would have killed more people than I did. Corona -- learn to live with it. Yes, I was kidding about the bleach."
Biden, "We are all in this together." Lord Dampnut, "Look at the Democratic mayors, look at the blue states, I think Fauci might be a Democrat."
Election interference
Lord Dampnut, "Biden takes money from foreign governments." Biden, "I have released all my tax returns." Lord Dampnut, "No U."
Biden's family is grifting money, says the guy whose daughter has a nice cushy job in the White House and valuable Chinese trademarks (approved as soon as her father became president).
Lord Dampnut on North Korea, "Having a good relationship with other countries is a good thing." Except when it comes to Germany, Canada, France, Australia, and the rest of the US allies, apparently.
Healhtcare
We are going to protect pre-existing conditions, says the guy who tried and failed to repeal Obamacare and is at the moment in court trying to get rid of it.
Lord Dampnut's vastly better healthcare plan that he was going to unroll on day 1 still seems to be two weeks away, unfortunately.
Lord Dampnut, "Biden and his socialist buddies want to destroy Medicare and Social Security." Because, you know, Biden is such a radical socialist.
Lord Dampnut, "We are going to take over the House, because Pelosi doesn't want to approve a COVID relief bill." ROFL.
Lord Dampnut, "We shot the relief bill down because money was going to Democratic cities and states."
Immigration/Race
Lord Dampnut, "Who built the cages we kept the children in, huh?"
Lord Dampnut, "Imma let ya finish, but Hunter's e-mails, though."
Lord Dampnut, "I'm the least racist person in this room." Sure, if everyone else left the room.

Ken Kurson, a friend of President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and an associate of
former New York City mayor current Borat 2 star Rudy Giuliani, was arrested Friday by the FBI and charged with a "pattern of stalking and harassment against three victims," including one he blamed for the dissolution of his marriage, according to federal prosecutors in Brooklyn.
Kurson surrendered to the FBI Friday morning and is expected to make an initial appearance in Brooklyn federal court later on Friday.

Ha ha.
But tell us about the conspiracy theories. That stuff is gold too.
