If replacing Justice Ginsberg before the election doesn't inspire a march on Washington, nothing will.

Don't forget there's a big ol' lame duck period. The same Republicans (e.g. McConnell) who decided that Garland shouldn't even get a hearing since he was nominated in February(?) of an election year are going to be perfectly happy pushing their candidate through after losing an election but before the results post. The only real chance is that maybe there are enough (four) Republicans to buck the trend.

If McConnell's move comes as a surprise to anyone, they obviously haven't been paying enough attention.

Trump is what it is, but I really hope for the sake of what's left of the US that McConnell is voted out this year. This dude is just impossible.

The good news is: Antonin Scalia has been dead for four and a half years !
I already knew that. Of course. But reading it again is enough to make my day.

Fat chance. Kentucky is as red as it gets and McConnell is filthy rich. Republicans losing Senate majority on the other hand...

Just on the politics of the Supreme Court pick... If you've been fortunate enough to get to follow conservative rhetoric about Trump from your social media feed or you're just a glutton for punishment and like to read up on it, you'll see quite a few conservatives, especially the evangelical Christian flavor, say they'll hold their nose to vote Trump just so they get good SC picks, since that's playing the long-game.
You can see the problem already. Dems of course want to push the selection to after the election so (knock on wood) Biden gets the pick. But that's going to also be exactly the thing that's pushing the most wavering part of Trump's base back into the Trump camp.
The other thing is that it's just going to set up a very polarized debate which is going to galvanize both sides, but probably the conservatives more, because nothing makes them go more apeshit than misunderstanding what the Supreme Court does 99% of the time (it's not nearly as clearly "polarized" as people think it is, only a relatively minor number of cases, and even then it's not on the legal issues that they think it is) and thinking that this one pick is going to be the difference between the US being a country of God or of Satan.
So anyway, generally I think the natural logic of the supreme court pick plot arc is going to play in Trump's favor politically.
But of course it plays to the Dems side as well. Well, it should have for Clinton's base in 2016 too (there was also a supreme court pick riding over that line), but the difference now is that the voters of 2020 remember the shock of losing in 2016, so should be galvanized in a special way, even for the same dynamic as 2016.

Yeah, I've noticed conservatives in the US tend to display a special brand of judicial fetishism for whatever reason. Do they think the courts are somehow going to relitigate the culture war they lost or something?
One thing to consider regarding the election, though, is that evangelicals never left Lord Dampnut and have been his staunchest and most fervent supporters throughout. They are not just his base, they are the base of his base. And there are only so many of them. Also, from what I've heard from the political gurus, there are not all that many people left undecided. The vast majority of people seem to have already made up their mind and barring something catastrophic (or maybe not even then) they are not going to budge.
That said, it is a game of very small numbers and this was probably the best possible thing that could have happened to Lord Dampnut's campaign (aside from not having wasted close to a billion dollars and running out of money before the finish line).
Anyway, it looks like Biden still leads among women, minorities, college-educated men, and former officials of this administration:
