Did you really watch the convention?
For my entire life, these have been nothing more than infomercials and I wish the networks would charge the national parties the going rate for prime time advertisements. I understand that their decisions are going to be determined by ratings, and I hope that this year's low ratings will put an end to this garbage, but it probably won't. There are much better uses of screen time in the public interest. The Democratic and Republican party conventions together are going to take up ~24 hours of prime time. How about dedicating that 24 prime time hours to in-depth issue-oriented debates, an hour or two per issue depending on its importance? And in addition to the candidates, include independent subject matter experts supporting the different positions? Or if they really want to do a public service, put on something educational in prime time for once. Anything but this high school pep rally shit.

Biden's nomination acceptance speech at the convention was pretty good as far as speeches go, but the real highlight was this boy:
I will be surprised if Trump doesn't make fun of him.
And yes, heywood, I watched. Conventions have never been about in depth analysis. If nothing else it does tell us Biden can pronounce words and read. He can at least appear presidential which will be a relief. I swear it made me ache for intelligence and decency in office when Obama spoke. Maybe we can at least have a portion of that back with Joe.

Yeah, you can tell that at least Biden has read the speech beforehand. And Lord Dampnut does have a history of making fun of people's disabilities, but I think even he has to recognise the disastrous optics at this point. Though I wouldn't really be surprised either if he did go there just to get attention and stoke some more culture war.
I mostly just skimmed through the convention and watched the highlights. Biden's speech, Kamala's speech (her bio was very professionally done), the Obamas' speeches, etc. For me, it's more the showmanship and the historical aspect of it -- I'm not really expecting anything of substance. I'm actually more looking forward to the Republican convention, as it looks like might turn out to be a glorious shitshow. They are going to have all the best people... Diamond and Silk, the My Pillow guy who's pushing some kind of a dangerous untested substance as a COVID cure, that couple who aimed their guns at protesters, Steve Bannon (if he can get bail), and of course Lord Dampnut.
Pyrian on 21/8/2020 at 19:34
I think Bannon posted bail immediately? The joke being passed around is: "RNC: Indicted? Invited!"
Starker on 21/8/2020 at 19:47
Oh, wasn't the bail like millions of dollars? Wall building must be a pretty lucrative business then.
Also, at this point, it's going to be tough to find people around Lord Dampnut who haven't been criminally charged with something.

I expect the Republican convention will have some cringe-worthy moments and some jaw droppers, along with being a fact-checker's paradise. All the more reason for me to avoid it.
As for Bannon, Republicans have been complaining for a while that SDNY is partisan. For them, this is just more evidence that SDNY is abusing its prosecutorial power in a partisan effort to aid the Democratic party.

...Prevent Republicans from being defrauded? :p Man these people can be their own worst enemies.

Once upon a time, US president's campaign chair and chief strategist being arrested by the Post Office would be a major scandal. These days, it's just your average Thursday morning.

I'm guessing the thinking is that it's better to have crooks in charge than communists. I really think the base of the party believes the government and media have been infiltrated and taken over by a globalist plot to turn us all communist and take away their property and livelihood and give it to whoever the boogeyman of the day is: muslims, central americans, black people from the ghetto, etc. If you really believe the other side wants to take away your life as you know it, you can rationalize all kinds of incompetence, corruption, and misbehavior from your own side.

Tony_Tarantula, I have no idea what you did here to earn such ire; maybe you deserve it. But I, for one, am glad that you have escaped your previous indoctrination.
