https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2020/07/how-jared-kushners-secret-testing-plan-went-poof-into-thin-air) This could go in the corona virus thread, but the punchline is really about the corruption of this administration. The US has the most covid19 cases in the world by far right now because the first states that got hit were democratic-leaning states, prompting them to commit to a state-by-state response approach. Search your heart; you know it's true.
The White House response coordinator that was feeding them overly optimistic models carries a lot of blame too though. But that's what happens when you create a environment where people that say things the president doesn't want to hear get quickly booted out.

But the effort ran headlong into shifting sentiment at the White House. Trusting his vaunted political instincts, President Trump had been downplaying concerns about the virus and spreading misinformation about it—efforts that were soon amplified by Republican elected officials and right-wing media figures. Worried about the stock market and his reelection prospects, Trump also feared that more testing would only lead to higher case counts and more bad publicity. Meanwhile, Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus response coordinator, was reportedly sharing models with senior staff that optimistically—and erroneously, it would turn out—predicted the virus would soon fade away.
Against that background, the prospect of launching a large-scale national plan was losing favor, said one public health expert in frequent contact with the White House's official coronavirus task force.
Most troubling of all, perhaps, was a sentiment the expert said a member of Kushner's team expressed: that because the virus had hit blue states hardest, a national plan was unnecessary and would not make sense politically. “The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political strategy,” said the expert.
That logic may have swayed Kushner. “It was very clear that Jared was ultimately the decision maker as to what [plan] was going to come out,” the expert said.

WASHINGTON — Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump has repeatedly touted his administration's supply of ventilators, a critical tool for treating patients with life-threatening respiratory symptoms.
But internal emails and documents obtained by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee suggest that the Trump administration failed to enforce an existing contract with a major medical manufacturer, delayed negotiations for more than a month and subsequently overpaid as much as $500 million for tens of thousands of the devices — a costly error at a time when officials from some of the biggest states were warning of shortages.

All the fascist pageantry aside, you'd think that just the sheer incompetence and mismanagement and corruption alone would be a deal-breaker. It's clear that the guy doesn't know how to govern, doesn't even want to govern, and in fact does not care much about anything other than what he can get out of it. He doesn't give a rat's ass about people dying on his watch or the economic hardships they suffer. If anything, he probably thinks it's their fault and wholly deserved for making him look bad.
The way I see it, the choice for US citizens is clear -- do you want four more years of whatever this has been, but this time on steroids and completely unhinged?

I only now got around to reading the article, but holy crap is this dark. Getting people killed through ineptitude is already bad, but killing people because they thought it would benefit them politically is just... wow...

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Calling the situation a “total disaster,” Donald J. Trump warned on Sunday that the use of mail-in ballots could result in voting.
Appearing on Fox News, Trump said that there were “all kinds of studies” showing a “direct link” between mail-in ballots and votes cast.
“Wherever you've had mail-in ballots, there have been widespread cases of voting,” he said. “We're not going to let that happen.”

"As far as TikTok is concerned, we're banning them from the United States," Trump said to reporters while aboard Air Force One.
Trump said he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order. It was not immediately clear what such an order would look like and what legal challenges it might face.
"Well, I have that authority," he said.

Cybersecurity experts have said TikTok's potential risk to national security is largely theoretical and that there is no evidence to suggest that TikTok's user data has been compromised by Chinese intelligence.
