Cuz it's a loaded topic, rife for a political tug-of-war. On one hand, you have Conservatives pushing to making it, at the very least, more difficult to get an abortion. To counteract this push, the liberals will be out in the streets, handing out day after pills and abortion BOGO coupons to anyone passing by.
It's a pretty common thing these days. Like how the phrase "open borders" didn't exist in contemporary political discourse until Obama started talking about granting amnesty to the Dreamers, then suddenly the conservative talking heads were screaming CRISIS AT THE BORDER! WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTECT OUR SOVEREIGNTY FROM THE INVADING FOREIGN HORDES!

Not much, though I actually read the laws everyone is bitching about, rather than panicking on the rumors of what's contained therein.
Though I do think some people have become too cavalier about the subject. Yeah, I can understand being proud to stand up for your rights in face of opposition, but don't be so heady in your fervor that you cross the line between assertiveness and crassness.
