Your last part is what I was.getting at. It's not like some kind of barrier in some key locations is irrational. It's just nobody following the issue at a policy level was even proposing Trump's wall. It's pure red meat to fear-monger the easily spooked at rallies, not even meant to have a policy rationale.
I mean the idea originally came from one of those Cambridge Analytical kinds of places that found the phrase "build a wall" got good traction in polling, which is to say it triggers the fear/rage response of the amygdala particularly well (along with lock her up and some others). Needless to say, that kind of polling isn't where one should look for rational policy... maybe good for horror movie plot points, but not policy.
