Certainly, there are cases where resistance against government tyranny only results in tragedy. Hungary 56, Czechoslovakia 68, etc. And now Assad has nearly put down the resistance to his brutal regime, with no small help from Russia and Iran. It's not like unarmed resistance has been dealt with any less brutally, though.
But the point remains that none of what's happening would have been necessary. Turkey had already reluctantly agreed to a demilitarised zone along the border and the US was in excellent position to negotiate a settlement for their allies. Guess Lord Dampnut's towers in Istanbul were more important.
