That's simplistic to the point of insanity. Of course the total population density is merely the total number of people divided by the total square mileage, but that number tells you nothing about how far an average person needs to travel in any given day. The growth of suburbs as a viable living circumstance can be pinned
almost entirely on cheap gas. In turn, it's mostly living in suburbs that requires people to make relatively lengthy trips on a daily basis.

How much is gas/petrol where everyone here lives?
Mine is $3.89 per gallon. I just fueled up this morning. A 2002 Honda Accord 4-cylinder should not take $75 (US dollars) to fill up.

$8.64 unleaded, a bit more for diesel.
The petrol cost in the UK isn't really an incentive for me to get off my bicycle <small>the weather on the other hand</small>
