Well Mathew I'm sure you'll agree - people in the US get paid too damn much.
We do?
SubJeff on 6/8/2009 at 21:52
Damn right you do. Look at the pay you guys get compared to us for the same damn job.
I need to get used to calling this place the UK. I make the mistake of just calling it England all the time. I blame growing up in Africa where there was no concept of anywhere in the UK but England and London.
Is your brother in London?
No, he's in City-X-of-choice.
Oh yes, London.
I'm not even joking.

That's not really the case here, because comparable British Magic Circle firms pay on roughly the same scale as the American Biglaw firms. The firms I worked with in Dublin did as well.

And yet our poverty rate is much higher than yours. Huh.

Keep in mind that salaries vary a lot depending on where in the US you work. And so does the cost of living, especially housing & taxes. If I lived in Topeka, KS instead of Boston, MA, I could take a 50% pay cut and be better off. I would surely miss the recreational opportunities though.

But the gap is wider. You may have more people living in poverty but you also have more people living in luxury and many of the very rich do the same jobs as we do, with the same qualifications. How much does a medical resident earn in the US? I bet its more than $150k.
june gloom on 7/8/2009 at 17:47
Medical residents in the US can earn an average of around $56,500 in their sixth year. They start off at $46,000.
Once again you're making very broad assumptions about the United States without actually knowing what you're talking about. While that's okay- we all do that with countries we don't live in- it gets in the way of having a real discussion. We may have a lot of people earning a lot of money, but those people supposedly living in luxury have bills to pay too. And those bills are bigger.

Jesus! I just googled it and you are right! Wtf? And how much dept do they come out of med school with? Its nuts. I guess I was fooled by the salaries of attendings, which outstrip those in the UK unless you go largely (or 100%) private. Makes sense considering most medical care in the US is private I suppose but still its a something to consider in the long term when you embark on such a career. Perhaps all those residents should do botox and filler courses. I understand there is a lot of demand for it over there (getting more so here too).

Cry me a river. But yeah, one day people will figure out it aint about money. Congrats Starry. Have fun whatever you do. And sure, sure, try not to starve. Somehow I don't think you will.

"Cry me a river?" Why the hostility?
