So at todays rates that's about £50,000 to £93,000.
Hmmmm. This has got me wondering how much lawyers in the UK get paid. Can anyone shed any light? And does anyone know how much doctors in the US get paid? I'm wondering about this all because, well because if the thread in general but because of the info itt about the amount of dept people in the US end up in. I know what it is like the UK (I came out with £20k/$34k from a 4 year stint which is small compared to lots of people I know) and RBJ's figure of $160k for law students is just  to me unless they get on the higher end of the payscale v.quick.
I have no data for England, but in Northern Ireland the salary range for a newly qualified solicitor in 2008 was £20,500 to £23,750. (
http://www.abacus.jobs/UPLOADS/DOCS/Legal%20NF%202008.pdf) Here's a good breakdown - though bear in mind that a lot of salaries in the past year will have been frozen or otherwise stalled.

Well, that 160k was the heyday salary for incoming first years in big markets. Some of my classmates will make about that (if they haven't had their offers rescinded). For a smaller market perspective (Sacramento as opposed to San Francisco, for example) my firm pays 100k to incoming first years.
The plus for me is that this firm has benefited greatly from having a large natural resources practice, which has helped them avoid some of the nastier effects of the downturn. I worked my tail off to get the job but I know that luck is a lot of the reason why I've been able to keep it before I even start.

mmmmm yeeaaah. I don't know about the poker thing. I met a professional player a few weeks ago (I was thinking of buying his apartment) and he didn't seem like the most financially stable guy. Sure he had a fairly nice $425,000 apartment but thing is he was having to sell it to gamble some more.
Haha, I know a couple of online poker players from the UK, reasonably high stakes, and it's actually a good place to be into it because gambling winnings are tax free. However, there are always players that can't manage their money particularly well so that story doesn't surprise me.

edit: we are currently looking at mid-september dates for vegas and will update when we confirm.
September is very difficult for me for family reasons, the only weekend that would work is the 12-13 one... Hope it will work out, I've already had to give up on the Kingdom of Loathing Con on the 19-20 weekend because I'll happen to be going in a completely different directtion then :(

So I'm curious then. Where does the lower mode of that bimodal salary distribution come from? I find it difficult to fathom anybody with a post-graduate education (law or otherwise) making $40k. Are these law students who couldn't find a job in law and ended up working as generic office drones?
I'm in engineering and the recent grads I work with who have a Masters in EE or CS started around $80k (less for other engineering disciplines). I expected a law degree to fetch more, so the $80-160k seems a lot more in line with my expectations.
Oh, and since I finally know what this thread is about, congratulations for completing the exam. :thumb:

Vegas is lame, ( or lamé, depending); Tahoe at least has the advantage of a great big (
