Pffaah, if its not Christianity then what's the difference? They're all filthy heathen, the atheists just worship their theories and equations instead of veils and AKs. In the end, there is only one religion.

In America the kids can't pray in school unless the prayer is for Mother Earth.
Consider that the US is founded upon a religious view of inalienable rights, based on ideas adopted from European cultures. All moral principles I can think of come from one religion or other. Can anyone name any culture-wide value system anywhere that arose via the social contract without religious influence? If not, it can be argued that without religion individual rights do not exist and the culture slides into anarchy.
If I don't lose my investments to a major market crash by the time society crashes, I'll have enough money to live outside the city and maybe hire some armed guards. :thumb:

No it isn't.

No, wait, that's a genius idea! Convert the whole of America to wicca! :thumb:

What about a religion that calls for human sacrifice? :ebil:

Having just read the chapter in The God Delusion regarding the origin of morals, I was rather expectant of that post too. Though a little disappointed you didn't go further, StD.

I was referring not to Wicca but to the religion of Environmentalism -- Earth in the Balance, animal rights, and the arrogance to believe that humans are powerful enough to accidentally destroy the environment on a global scale. On purpose, maybe we could do it. Destroy humanity by accident, sure. But life itself is tenacious and the bacteria and roaches will outlive us all.
Wiccans don't worship Mother Earth, they worship "The Goddess" who is the physical world (including the earth) and "The God" who is the unseen and the unknowable. They use knives and sex in their rituals (not at the same time), but Wiccans do have a moral system, the first principle is something along the lines of "do harm to no one."
The religions which encourage human sacrifice I can think of are/were theocracies (religion = government) and the victims were captured enemies. Most religions sanction capital punishment when carried out by the government, so I think my original point still stands.

But if conservatives really want to conserve the language they should use British English spellings, not those new fangled colonial bastardisations.
Gotta love a wiki that has "commandments" instead of guidelines. Thou shalt have no other Gods in your system of historical dating.

Not exactly, as Americans use English words that have fallen into disuse in the UK, like "closet". It's just a daft expectation for something like Wikipedia, as it isn't an "American" site as such.
