I've since i played system shock 2 the first time been searching for something similar to it. Something that would bring me back the feeling i had when i played system shock 2 the first time.
Unfortunantly that has never really happened. The closest i had been was when i played Dead Space, which was pretty close (and then the 50 other times i've played ss2 afterwards hah)
Untill the other day when i decided to try Amnesia - The Dark Descent on steam.
That game.. Is terrifying!
Allthough the game is set somewhere in the middle of 1800, it still is the closest i have ever been to get back the feeling like the one i got when i played SS2 the first time around 10 years ago.
And the story behind the studio is actually also reminding me of LGS. This game was rushed out at its last stages, because of some budget thingy. Ending is better than ss2's though :p And sales of the game was quite dissapointing in the begining but as it seems now they have sold more than expected, which is diffenantly deserved!
You should really try it.. You can get the demo on steam for free ofc.. It really surpriced me!

Just watched a gameplay video of it. Looks and feels alot more like Thief than System Shock 2.

My pathetic research indicates that the game's predecessor, Penumbra, may be more akin to system shock, due to the time period in which it's set. However, neither can be considered "futuristic" so the similarities lie more in the gameplay elements I'd imagine.

Note that this is on sale on Steam today, for 66% off (€5.10), or 76% off (€3.60) if you already own a Penumbra game.
I grabbed a copy during one of the previous Steam sales, but haven't got around to trying it yet.

And anyone got the humble indie bundle 2, and added the first bundle to steam, they should have a penumbra game. awesome price.

I ended up with Penumbra Overture three times - once on CD, once via the first HIB, then I bought it on GamersGate with parts 2 and 3 so I could play them all at once. Parts 1 and 2 are excellent and form a single story, with part 2 most resembling the System Shock series ('Many'-like mutants in a ruined base, logs that piece together the past). Part 3 is rather disconnected and different, more of a series of puzzles, and is an optional extra.
Own Amnesia but wanted a gap after the Penumbra series before playing it. Currently playing STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, currently I am finding it to be almost as immersive as System Shock 2 and Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines.

How the hell are System Shock 2 and Amnesia even remotely similar?
