Today I read one of the more interesting things I've read this month, Kohl's "The Values Americans Live By." It is a classic article designed to provide insight to non-Americans into the "13 most important American values," and how and why these values influence American behavior. This article also promotes the understanding of how American cultural "filters" affect their perceptions and behaviors in cross-cultural communications.
As an American who has traveled a lot, I enjoyed reading an explanation of my culture meant for outsiders. Here is the article:

Or if you're too lazy* to read the article, here's the list:
Personal Control over the Environment
Change
Time & Its Control
Equality
Individualism/Privacy
Self-Help
Competition
Future Orientation
Action/Work Orientation
Informality
Directness/Openness/Honesty
Practicality/Efficiency
Materialism/Acquisitiveness
Enjoy, discuss, agree, or disagree.**
Don
* Don't be offended by the word "lazy." As an American, I value those who would take action to read the article for themselves rather than be dependent on my list. :thumb:
** As an American I don't really care which. :laff:
See how this works?

Did you mean to post this in general community chat. If not a moderator will probably move it there eventually because it has nothing to do with fan missions at all. I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud, I'm just letting you know. Try posting your blurb at the link below. These guys love stuff like that.

For what it is worth though the whole article seems like just one big opinion though for the most part it is spot on. There is things I agree with and things I don't. Values are more of an individual thing and may even extend to a particular family unit but shouldn't be applied to any one culture. Even in the general sense.

Can you explain the relevance of this to the Thief FM community or to the Thief games in general?

I have two experiences of Americans ... two young'ens I met in Tenerife that were fucking Brill, although they thought Adolf Hitler was the 'president' of England during WW2 - bless em, and when I went to New York for my 30th BDay - Fucking ace - I had a busker singing Happy Birthday on a train from GC Station, and the whole of the carriage were joining in - mind you, I was off me trolley and giving him what I thought were 1 dollar bills - it all looked the same to me - I must've given him a weeks worth of spending money in half an hour!!
Ah, those were the days ...

It's prolly extremely dificult trying to clasify people. I've lived in the States for a few years now and have seen, as in lots of countries, so many different people with so many different personal values. Detail, which makes this country really interesting.
However if you want a list, maybe we could include BBQ to the point that competitions are held, and foreigners sooner or later will end up buying grills too.
LOL, Jasee, now I'm imagining Hitler drinking tea, eating little sconces and talking about the weather while secretely hatching a strategy to be "The Queen" in/of England.
