Aha, now it's there. Possibly wasn't before patch .07? Or I had my 16:9 settings wrong. :D
It was there from the start. The only GUI indicator they added with a patch was stamina.

Sounds like you've got it figure out fett, but do give it a chance. It doesn't hold your hand but its very rewarding. I remember being pissed off at the game for a fair portion of the beginning, I died often and couldn't seem to hit anything, but once you get the hang of it its gaming bliss (at least it was for me).

Heh heh, I did exactly the same thing when I figured out how to equip artifacts. I used three of them at once, and couldn't figure out why I was suddenly dead! keep playing, eventually you will find some better artifacts that won't kill you, or at least have some anti-radiation effects.

Both STALKER games are really strange games, i don't think i've played any other games before that are so frustrating and often confusing but manages me to keep playing and enjoying it.
I don't like that bandages is the most rare thing in C.S (except for artifacts and some weapons), stupid and strange design.
Control Points are very bugged it seems, sometimes you can just stand there and it will be captured, while other times nothing will happen.
How to get to one location to another can also be extremely confusing sometimes, i want to go to Yantar to speak to someone, but the guide cant take me there and i can't get through the metal gate in the camp before that location.

Control points - don't you have to wait until a friendly squad arrives to take it?
Bandages aren't that rare in CS but you'll use a lot more of them, particularly at the start of the game. Once you get mama's beads, you can pretty much do away with them altogether but before that I found I had to buy them to keep stocked up (and running out often means death by bleeding).
Not sure what you mean about travelling to locations, the pointers on the map tell you where the transition points are and where they lead, guides can take you to any guide on your current map and often to guides in other areas.
When you say you can't get through the metal gate, do you mean the actual bunker with the scientists on the yantar map, or can you not get onto the yantar map at all?

As an example i had the Flea Market as a Control Point, which wasnt under attack and was already populated by Duty (i believe), still it had the yellow marker on the map. And no, i think you can take control points by yourself too.
Yes i know that the map tells you exactly where to go, it's just that i had to back track for like 10 minutes to get to Yantar instead of taking a much, much shorter route (which i'm sure will open up later). Just a little annoying sometimes.
Btw, anyone know of a sleeping bag mod that works with the latest patch?

Sleeping would have been a very good thing to put in CS. It's just that much meaner a game and darker at night. At the start of the game particularly when you've got no armour and a shotgun or some AR with no bullets I was always "Balls to going out with no NV" (although first tier NV isn't actually much help at all anyway) and I'd just find somewhere cosy to sit and then wander off and make coffee or something until dawn rolls around.

Dunno, but there's a time stretcher mod about. I havent' got a link ready. But it's fun to watch the landscape from a rooftop and go all H.G. Wells.

no walkthru helped me here:
after jantar, into the red forest, follow strelok, ambush, bang bang so far so good.
then:
one has to find an anomaly in the red forest. the guys there are supposed to aid cleaning it from monsters, probably with a sidequest, but they don't offer anything of the sort. one guy waves at me but shows no further interest. also that bloody forest is irradiated like mad. can't go through without a proper suit anyway?
