fett, look in the thread(s) about artifacts.
This game certainly isn't "novice-friendly", especially for those used to modern multiplatform games (not that I mean you).

Yep, bad case of the radz caused by wearing a crappy artifact. This aint Fallout 3 where its just a minor annoyance (Now im radioactive! That cant be good!). The Zone claimed another victim ohahaha :o
Could you die from drinking too much in vanilla stalker or was that AMK? One time i walzed into a radioactive spot, gulped 3 vodkas to remedy and then dropped dead after 3 steps, was like this Heartpunch scene in Kill Bill XD

Let's see. The artifact description says "Emits radiation". In it's stats you can see something like this:
Radiation +1
When you put it on, a big-ass ugly radiation sign appears on your screen and you start to lose health.
So as for your question in the topic? Signs point to yes.
Right on. ;)
Part of my confusion lies in the fact that - let's be honest - there's no explanation about what constitutes an 'artifact' and the word is usually used to refer to a relic, or in most game worlds, something like treasure. Plus, when Wolf gives it to you, it looks like a mangled horse turd in the inventory, and doesn't remotely resemble a piece of armor. The natural response is "hmm...let me equip this and see what it does." Once I realized it was killing me and took it off, I had about 1/4 of a minute to undo the damage - not enough to find a counteractive.
Though I'm excited about the prospect of a non-dumbed down game, a simple warning from either the trader or Wolf would have sufficed to help the player avoid such an easy mistake at the beginning. Even in SS2, Polito explains about hypos and radiation at the beginning (as if the glowing green smoke wasn't enough of a tip-off). God knows the conversation trees in Stalker are fucking huge anyway - a simple warning would have been nice. :)
Onward.

Well to be fair on my first playthrough I thought artifacts were temporary effects, magic-like pills that worked for a while and then wore off, so I didn't use any(Even sold Mama's Beads) till Red Forest when I realized they're quite permanent.
d'oh

There is something of a discontinuity in the fact that they're supposed to be small crystaline things that 'do stuff' to you when you attach them to your belt. But what you find in a fairly realistic game is a huge, Mario size gemstone bobbing up and down on the ground. (I couldn't work out why they weren't doing anything after I picked them up. Which is dumb but less fatal at least)

... artefacts affect you from your belt but not from your backpack.

I got something of a similar problem in Clear Sky. Sometimes my health goes down due to radiation, but until I notice that (not dancing in irradiated gooey pools) I'm as good as dead. Is there really no hud alert for that or am I too stupid to see it? You know, like the yellow bar in SoC.

Isn't there a small radiation icon on the screen?
