Pretty self-explanatory, I need a regisry fix for that. System is XP. I thought I'll ask people in case someone did that before, as Google goes absolutely apeshit when you enter any combination of "Explorer", "Windows", "XP" and "registry".

Set one folder the way you want everything to look, then hit Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Apply to All Folders.

That's the way it's meant to work - but if there are too many folders then it may stop working after a while. Vista is worse than XP as it tries to 'guess' what you want based on the type of files it sees in a folder and can get it wrong.
Increasing the BagMRU Size should, in theory, help with the first problem - but there are quite a few more hoops to go through for Vista. Neither option enforces sorting by file type in all circumstances. I suspect creating a custom version of explorer would be the only way to do exactly what Koki wants.

Set up the folder the way you want it to display, then hold down Ctrl and press the window's 'X' button to close it.
The settings should then be applied to all new windows, including file save/open windows.

Whoa, it worked. Thanks a lot.
ZylonBane - that's the logical thing to do, and that's probably why it doesn't work.

God I hate tiles. Every time I open a folder with tiles I set it to details sorted on ascending file type, but now I don't have to. Thanks! :thumb:

If the apply to all folders button doesn't seem to be working, try pressing Reset all folders too. I usually press them both a few times (first the one, then the other) to make sure, even though that's not very scientific.

Here's another question: How do you make the open dialogs always view as details instead of tiles or as a list (depending on the content). Do I really need to use a tool like (
http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/) File-Ex for this? Or is there some hidden windows option I don't know about?

The same way, set a folder to view by details and then ctrl+click on the 'X' to close it.
