I am so sick of Windows I could scream. I could list all the things I hate about it, it would take all day. Are there any viable options for an alternative OS that would still allow me to use DOS when I want to? I am particularly concerned about still being able to play Thief and other games, as well as use professional publishing software of various sorts. I am geeky enough to figure out most software, though I am far from being able to do the more exotic things. Any advice would be gratefully received.

For OS, I would recommend you to try (
http://www.ubuntu.com/) Ubuntu.
If you really want to use fully working DOS, then you should get virtualization software like (
http://www.vmware.com/) VMWare Server. There is linux version of it, too.
(
http://www.winehq.org/) WINE is pretty handy if you want to run Windows programs in linux without using virtualization softwares. Plus most of games does work on it.

Uh, for Dos it's quite a bit easier to just use (
http://www.dosbox.com/) DosBox which is designed for that purpose and doesn't actually require you to set up a virtual hard drive and actually install the regular Dos package.
And yes, Ubuntu is a good choice, generally. You can mess around with it on the Live CD before you actually do the install.

SLAX is a neat mini-linux for emergency situations, about 200MB big, you can burn it as Live CD or boot in from flash disk. It contains all essential apps like web browser, media player, text editor, DVD burner, instant multimessenger, etc.

(RIGHT NOW the site is 404 for me, dunno why. Try later.)
