So what are the benefits of joining one faction or the other? With all the downside involved, there must be some good reasons to hook up with a group too.

Without a mod you can ally only with Freedom. The benefits described in the first post.

How do you ally with freedom? I did all their quests but nothing...

So there is no way to go to the Duty-Only section of the bar?
Talk about unfinished.

I was hoping there was a way to make the 'You can't go there!' dude in the Bar allow me to enter.
I'm curious what is there. (if there is something there, that is)

According to everything I've read elsewhere, it is possible to join Duty as a full member and gain access to their restricted areas. In fact, it appears that most people consider that the "normal" faction to join. It's just a matter of having to complete other parts of the game first, before returning to the Bar and following the Barkeep's instructions to join up. I don't know, not having progressed that far myself, but from what I understand of the process, I wouldn't be surprised if, after doing enough to unlock the "join Duty" option, a lot of people never bother returning to the Bar and so are never actually given the option.

Well there is. :p
During my first playthrough (I'm on my 2nd), at one point I started kinda jumping and goofing around near him and the bar nearby and somehow mnaged to jump up on his shoulder. Kept kinda jumping and maybe leaning and crouching and somehow managed to slip behind him from off his shoulder.
Interestingly, as soon as I got behind him, he walked to a spot in between where he normally stands and the entrance step/handrail area where you come in. Thus after I looked around back there I was able to just walk out. After I did walk out he repositioned himself to block the entry way again.
What's back there? All the women!!!! No, I must be just kidding.... maybe... ;)

So there was nothing of any interest behind his back? ;)
