It wasn't 404. That implies that you were able to connect to the server, but that the page was not found. This is not what happened.
The DNS server that holds the IP address for the forums was not functioning, so your ISP was not able to work out where TTLG was. If you knew (or worked out, like Nameless Voice) the IP address you could use it normally.

Internet Explorer reports almost everything as a 404; you gotta read the fine print to see what it's really bitching about.

I'm Firefox... I say 404 anytime any browser can't find a site just out of habit.
