Honestly, I cannot remember any year when I was lacking for games to play, whether current games or old ones. Sure, there were years when the games that were most talked about on gaming sites were generic and boring, and when AAA games were more boring than in other years, but I honestly think that a majority of "Games used to be so much better!" talk is simply variations on the theme of nostalgia. I might not find games in every single year that I count among my favourites, but every year games will have been published that I played and greatly enjoyed. And when I go through a phase when I don't seem to enjoy a single game, that's usually due to my own mood rather than games becoming worse in any way.

I'm sorry to do the irritating QFT thing, but that's pretty much exactly how I think and feel about this topic.

Is QFT where you mash buttons to make a more complex thing happen in the game? Because there's too much of that these days.

Fuck nostalgia.
I agree with Thirith.
Games still rock it, despite the (sometimes really shitty) shortcomings of some new trends.

I tend to find that the fluctuation of my interest levels have always been driven by circumstances independent of whatever games were available at any one time. There have always been factors that have driven me into or away from games based on my personal circumstances, and the types of games that I have enjoyed during these periods tend to reflect my perspective during these times. While there have been times where I have had very little appetite or time available to play any new releases this is mainly as a consequence of being a little older now and having a lot more responsibilities. Like a lot of you I have my own little family now (3 children under the age of 5), have undertaken study (just completed the final assignment of a Master's degree a few minutes ago so am a "free" man again :)) whilst trying to hold down a job and some kind of a social life, and have more work responsibilities than what I used to.
Unfortunately there has been an increasing commoditisation of gaming over the past few years that has resulted in a huge backlog of games for most of us. Recently I've discovered that many of these games have turned out to be absolute gems such as The Walking Dead, Kentucky and Brothers to name but a few, that I had initially discarded after only a few minutes but boy am I glad that I went back for more. It kind of reminds me of how changing media from cassette tapes to CDs resulted in most people skipping tracks based on how catchiness of the first 10 seconds of a track; it got even worse with MP3s...
