What would we do if we didn't start to think about cause and results ?
That's why GBM said the anti-porn side needs more causative logic.
Anyway, I agree with you about the depiction of women in porn which is ... only remotely related to how real persons look and act. The same could probably be said about men in porn.
Whether this has a significant influence on someone watching porn is a similar question like whether violence in games makes us into killers. What many consumers don't like is that the anti-porn and anti-games lobby thinks of us as remote controlled idiots who can't think for themselves.
Would I like porn were sex is portrayed as a stimulating, aesthetical experience for both sexes? HELL YES!
Do I think the available porn will distort my view on sex? I very much doubt it.

I think that there are many examples of causative logic in medical researches (in case of psychiatrists) and media researches (in case of mass media experts).
But guess what, I'll do a wise thing as a member of the staff suggested, and shut up now. ;)

There is no causative link, there never has been and there never will be. What there is is a tremendous corollation between sex offenders and extreme / illegal pornography. But that's like using the fact that some criminals use guns as a justification for outlawing private possession of firearms. Which I suppose is another kettle of tard I've just set on the boil, but hey.
When there are people who get sexually excited by the bra and panty section of the Sears catalogue, I think it's probably too difficult to define "pornography" by its effects on people. "Sexually explicit material" as a definer is sketchy as well -- I don't recall anyone reading Burroughs or Anais Nin and then going out for a rape.
The point is that there are people out there who do antisocial and criminal things, who hurt and abuse others for no real purpose other than the fact that they wanted to and could. These people do not need provocation, justification, or reason beyond their whims, and everyone else demonising any social phenomenon at all as the "culprit" is as narrowminded and short-sighted (and with as low an opinion of human beings in general) as Jack Thompson or Tipper Gore or anyone else who thinks society's problems are the fault of anything other than the caprice of its membership.

Incidentally I study media sciences and I can tell you that for every study that finds a connection between media influence and and the behavior of consumers there are three that don't find this connection.
All in all it's far from conclusive, almost all of the studies are biased in one way or another. And even if some are not, people who have an agenda will pick the ones that fit their cause from this rubble.

BR# seems to have "causes" confused with "is one step in a long chain of events which may, but does not necessarily, lead to".
To help you with this, here are some sample statements for you to complete! Just fill in the blank with either of the phrases from above as appropriate!
Mixing vinegar and bicarbonate of soda _____ a chemical reaction.
Kissing _____ unwanted pregnancy.
Sticking live wires up your nose _____ death by electrocution.
Viewing pornography ____ rape.
Posting on TTLG _____ mockery.
Aerothorn on 28/5/2007 at 18:04
"causes" on that last one.
Rug Burn Junky on 28/5/2007 at 18:43
Well, in BR's case, anyway, especially when he posts things like:
Quote:
Ooops, I hit the right nerve.
and actually believes it.Honestly, There are people like me who have very openminded and healthy views of sexuality, without judging people for engaging in behaviour that may be outside of the norm.
And then there are people with repressed, fucked up views like BR, who are clearly NOT able to appreciate and enjoy their sexuality. The fact that he points to things "Feminists like me because they don't think I'm evil like most men" is sure enough example of that. Throw in all of the obsequious "please like me, girls" stuff that he's thrown out on this forum alone.
Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot?
Besides the fact that it's a fucked up warped view of his own gender, it's also a whole load of paternalistic bullshit that he's spouting. "Oh, I'm a feminist, I'm on your side." As though every fucking female in the world is a victim unless there are knights in shining armor like BR-PUFNSTUFF to protect them.
I know the type of guy who resorts to this shit. I'm sure you've come across a few vulnerable girls who have serious anti-male issues and preyed upon their vulnerability by talking up how you're "not like other guys" and a couple of them might even have believed it. That's not caring, that's fucking creepy.
Yeah sure, I'm more than willing to go over the line and make all sorts of inappropriate jokes, and that makes me a "cretin" and a "pervert?" The only people who'd seriously think
that have a stick shoved pretty fucking far up their ass if it's interfering with their ability to plant their tongue in their cheek and recognize sarcasm and exaggeration.
I'm 33 years old, I've had a number of very meaningful long term relationships with some rather extraordinary women. None of them needed to be protected from me, or any other "ordinary male sexist pig," because they were all emotionally healthy to begin with, and don't view the differences between genders as some sort of war, with good guys and bad guys. And not a single one of them have anything bad to say about me now (including my wife, who knows EVERY single thing I've ever done, and still adores me).
I highly doubt BROU812 can say the same, Hell, I'd be shocked if he weren't a virgin. So for someone who is so clearly emotionally stunted in his views on sex and relationships to have the fucking balls to lecture me.... jigga fucking please.

Agreed. Why did I even start this thread? Am I stupid? No, I realized that it would explode in my face... But i'll have you all know that one day soon I will own a huge pipe organ and a mansion and sit in my attic playing the organ with emotion and there WILL be gargoils. Lots of them! And you're not invited!!! HMPFH!
