...and in other good news from PAX, (
http://kotaku.com/5630732/a-brief-surprise-glimpse-at-aliens-colonial-marines/gallery/) Gearbox are confirmed to still be working on Colonial Marines. I
It shouldn't be a hard task at all to best the mediocre AvP 2010 from Rebellion.
My only concern is will a squad-based FPS be anywhere near as intense or creepy as a game where your protagonist is on their own (aka the traditional Survival Horror mold)?

A summary of Colonial Marines discussion from (
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/06/gearbox-discusses-aliens-colonial-marines-brothers-in-arms-se/#continued) Gearbox's PAX Prime 2010 panel. They give you an idea why we've heard next to nothing about the game for such a long time, there's been a such a strict media black out thanks to Fox (and maybe Sega too).
Quote:
With Brothers in Arms addressed, Pitchford moved onto the studio's next missing project, Aliens: Colonial Marines. "On the Aliens front, one of the weird things, especially on days like today, we've been really successful with Borderlands and that's on everyone's mind. And today and yesterday and on Friday, Duke Nukem kind of took over. So people wonder, 'Are they even doing Aliens? What's going on there?'
"Here's the thing. This game is based on Aliens. It's a 20th Century Fox property and Sega is the publisher. So there's some fingers in this. We haven't really been able to be super free to be talk about everything we've been doing," Pitchford admitted.
But just because Sega hasn't been talking (or letting Gearbox talk!) doesn't mean it's not supportive of the project, Pitchford said. "Earlier this week, I was down in San Francisco and I had lunch with the head of Sega of America and he is committed to this. And we're going to make this awesome. I know it's been awhile since the announcement first happened that we're in for Aliens. I promise you it will not take as long as Duke Nukem Forever. We're not going to let this dream die, it's going to happen."
The future of the Brothers in Arms franchise and another unannounced title hinted during 2008 were also discussed. See linked article.

I can imagine so. I mean, if left 4 dead was basically populated by versions of the witch that can run along the ceiling, and like to hide in pipes until your directly underneath, it would be pretty scary. Balancing the aliens health properly would be critical - unless you're going to be swamped by hordes of them (which doesnt look the case from the screenies), you ideally want it so it takes at least two of you to bring one down quickly (i.e. before it gets to face swiping and acid blood splash range) - that would keep things pretty tense, fit with the general fiction, and be good for teamplay. They'd better keep friendly fire and acid blood though. A lot of the tension in team shooters comes from knowing you can't just spray bullets wildly without killing your team.

Agreed. Potentially awesome, like a tenser Alien Swarm but in 1st person.

(

I look forward to hearing more about it. Gearbox and Sega have been kept this under wraps for too long. Hopefully it'll be a better made product than the highly flawed AvP3.

Type 'father' in lowercase.
Gives the same trailer, but with some gameplay at the end that looks a lot like last year's mediocre AvP.

'mediocre' my entire ass, AvP2010 was a far better game than it had any right to be
Jason Moyer on 3/6/2011 at 02:25
According to Steam I played it for 3 hours. It felt a lot longer than that somehow.

I liked the Marine campaign, but the whole thing feels like nobody bothered testing at all, with the useless flamethrower, overpowered Predator, and bullshit trophy kills. I'm hoping Gearbox is using AvP as a case study of what not to do in an Aliens game.
june gloom on 4/6/2011 at 02:34
The Predator has always been overpowered. If anything, he's been nerfed in this game by being made melee-focused, which is a stroke of genius actually.
