Hm. I wonder what the actual source of that order is.
Is it possible it's an order from Mother to Ash, not from WY itself? It's probably worth noting that the first line is in past tense, not an imperative. And by the time we see the order, the alien had already eaten several people.
Well, as I see it, it was serious gambling.
If the order came from the corporation, it would have been an irresponsible decision. The crew was untrained and unequipped for encounter with an alien lifeform and the corporation already had to know the lifeform is hostile. The corporation had to know that entire crew could be killed and the ore refinery and cargo which was Nostromo dragging along was quite invaluable to be left without care, potentially damaged or lost, it's later salvage would create just more expenses etc. And actually in the end it was desperately destroyed anyway...
Also remember that Ripley has partially decoded the space jockey's message with Mother's help almost in no time. If Mother was a semi-sentient AI with free decision abilities over the fate of the ship, it would be just more gambling from corporation. In this case, if Mother wanted the crew to explore the life form at all costs, it doesn't make sense she decoded the message for Ripley as a 'warning', offering benefit of the doubt to second officer in command.
Why the hell nobody from the crew had an idea to perform more detailed analysis of the message before they decided to land there?
Aaaah movies, they wouldn't be half as funny if they were guided by real life logic. :p

Don't forget they lost the payload. Something to take into account.
On the other hand, a company like WY could potentially absorb that sort of loss, particularly if there was the chance to generate an entirely new and
exclusive revenue stream from the critter.

No not necessarily. This is first contact with a non-human civilisation. They just wanted to be the first. The Nostromo was redirected whilst the crew were in hyper-sleep. We have no idea how long it took them to get there, or how much of a detour it was. The order was probably given days or weeks before arriving. W-Y were just being pragmatic.

If Mother managed to decode the signal as a warning in such a short time, then I presume that the signal has been thoroughly scrutinized by WY scientists before they decided what to do with it. As a pragmatic manager I wouldn't risk unexperienced crew to tamper with such a sensitive issue and loss of expensive freighter with cargo so easily. In the end they indeed have lost Nostromo, it's cargo and crew - so the plan to send there cheap, untrained crew has turned out to be failure anyway. Stupid management, anyone?
Well I can imagine that a corporate panel has discussed the issue, weighting costs and expenses before they have decided what to do, but it was the more stupid decision which has won. But if stupid decisions didn't win, we wouldn't have great movies. :cheeky:

Fucks sake, its because it's horrendously expensive to send spaceships flying about the cosmos and they take ages to get anywhere. The Nostromo happened to be the nearest vaguely suitable one when they made the decision.

You've just made it all up... Like me. :weird:

Is it? By the Aliens timeframe, they have encountered other intelligent life.
And even had sex with them.

Just because they're from Arcturus doesn't mean they're alien.

What do you propose they're doing on Arcturus that would make it not matter that it's a male?
