Yes, they were Mad About Her.
did nobody else get this? I lol'd.
Anyway. I agree with mothra on the *aliens turned it into a marketable franchise* thing but not because I think they tried to plan for it. I know Cameron didn't consult with giger or ridley about it. and anytime you see any kind of alien memoriabilia it usually falls into the world created by the Aliens movie. the avp games are all about the 2nd movie. the comics for the most part etc etc. Aliens was great. but in my opinion it ruined the artistic integrity of the franchise.. the very fact we call it a franchise is something I'll call into evidence. Mind you that's just my opinion and i'm not pointing fingers at anybody like Mothra is. Still though... Giger had nothing to do with the Queen alien.. he probably would've hated the idea.
and... Burke said that Ripley drifted through the CORE systems. I always interpreted this as she managed to probably drift right through all the heavily populated areas and just barely managed to get caught by a salvage ship on the other end of the human population centres. Space is big and empty and even if you populate an entire solar system. a little craft could easily drift by and nobody would ever see it.

Really. Do you have a source to back that up with or are you just spouting bullshit-
again?
Because Cameron wrote the screenplay, the offender is pretty much obvious.

But they didn't found it. Barely believable, almost absurd, since they knew about the signal coming from the planet long time ago - but there you go.
Who says they didn't know? The probably sent the colonists there to pave the way for the investigation. I'm not saying they wanted them all killed, but they didn't care too much and with some infrastructure there to "process" the Aliens once the atmosphere processor, living quarters etc were set up they would be good to go.

It was never properly explained though, why Ripley was in deep space for 70+ years, most likely the course of Narcissus was wrong, but then it's almost unbelievable they managed to find her. I presume normal interstellar travels should last only few weeks. In Aliens, they expected help to arrive in 17 days or so.
IIRC, the novelization of Aliens explain this. She simply drifted into a primary trade lane, at which point they found her.
It really shouldn't be that hard to believe. WY had no reason to rescue her - they wanted the alien, which was gone. And she herself talks about needing luck to be recovered in the ending of Alien.
Personally, I'm unconvinced the company actually did know about the alien during the Alien time frame. Special order 937 could've been a simple standing order - WY is certainly the kind of company to give their droids a hush-hush order to get anything valuable back, even if it means letting the crew get eaten.

I don't think WY knew what was on the planet but either Ash told them or there were records of what happened in the escape pod. Either way the colony may have been calculated.

Ash was the replacement science officer for the return journey. I interpreted that to mean that the company had already received the transmission well in advance.

Well they COULD know, but it doesn't make much sense to make such kind of big expenses for terraformation of one damn planetoid, just to examine an obscure signal long years later. What if the signal turns out to be just a damn probe or some prank or whatever? A management of a commercial body can't afford to think like that.
Also, if we presume your theory is right: then Burke is an ignorant idiot who screwed up plans of his employer - and even hoped he would be tapped on his shoulder when he gets back home with a specimen. Which also doesn't make sense, as an important insider, he must have been informed of the true purpose of the colony, in which case nothing we saw in Aliens would have happened.

Ah right, I've read the novelization but forgot it since... It's logical to presume that Rip had set Narcissus on the same course as Nostromo had, which actually could have been a trade route of certain level of importance, but then Narcissus most certainly didn't have any hyperdrive, so she really had to have big hope for rescue... But I presume that particular sector of the galaxy is buzzing with human activity, more or less... something for enthusiasts of Alien Expanded Universe to contemplate about, heh.
Also what Neb points out.

Yeah there's that. That's typically how it's interpreted as well. But knowing about the transmission and knowing about the alien are entirely different things.

Nostromo rerouted to new co-ordinates. Investigate life form. Gather specimen. Priority One. Insure return of organism for analysis. All other considerations secondary. Crew expendable."

Diet Coke, Large Fries."
