It's strange that the Fleet Foxes chose this picture. They certainly have this old-times-romantic-vibe, but for me there's nothing romantic whatsoever about this picture.
Hieronymus Bosch is crazy scary, even when his pictures are not filled with people getting killed in the most horrible fashion. It's only partly the skewed perspective. Mostly it's how vividly he depicted his times. A world of superstitious lunatics living in the most base and ignoble ways possible until dying from diseases they never understood. Bosch makes their lives appear so real and it's the normality of it all that I find repugnant. Like the ass hanging out of the castles' loo. That must have been a rich man. These times didn't allow for anyone to be different from the rest. Hell, they'd kill you for being a bit smarter than them.

Yeah the Bosch-esque picture doesn't suit their music in any way, shape or form. I was thinking that when I posted it. Even their justification for it doesn't make sense to me.
"We were trying to figure out what we wanted to do, and my brother had been working out some stuff, when I saw that (
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Pieter_Bruegel_the_Elder) Bruegel painting in a book my girlfriend had. I liked that it had a really intriguing meaning, like there's a story to each little scene. Which I just felt fitting for that record- dense but unified, not a collage or anything. And I liked its Where's Waldo? quality, that it was something you could look at for a long time on a vinyl sleeve and find new little things. It was very easy to get the museum in Berlin that has it to say yes. They were super excited a band wanted to use it and put it in their newsletter. When you open it up on the inside there's a paisley pattern traced from the back of a book that Skye (Skjelset, lead guitar)'s mum got me. We wanted two very different feelings."
Then again, these are the same head-in-the-clouds guys that ask where they can get a "mean bowl of tofu" when they play gigs in the deep south. Great voices though. Great picture too

Thanks to Vernon for trying to raise the tone again, Fleet Foxes is one of my favourites too.
