Wha?
Or, you know, he was trying to make a difficult 180 degree turn in tight airspace during intense fog, lost track of where he was and hit a building.
It's pretty much about 99% certain that losing an engine had nothing to do with it.
I just find it strange that if he was trying to make a 180 turn, he elected to make it towards a bunch of skyscrapers rather than the other way over the open water. If he lost an engine he would have done exactly what he did, turn in towards the land tightly and lose altitude.
Besides, the conditions were reported as marginal VFR, which means that the ceiling was 1 - 3000 feet and/or the visibility was 3 - 5 statute miles, and he was under 1000 the whole time. I'm just saying, even if he couldn't see, the smartest thing to do would have been to climb...AWAY from the buildings, not the opposite.
Additionally, he was with a flight instructor who was no doubt IFR rated and he himself had 88 hours of flight time.

you're supposed to call them african americans now sir :grr:
Shouldn't that be "African Canadians" for some people? (not you, Geebs, you're almost one of us, now...hehehehe....)

No, all negroes are African-Americans, now.
Where's your sense of PCness?

I once heard tell of a university student in a Shakespeare class referring to Othello as an African-American. :(

You may find it strange, but, it just so happens that that's the way to do it (unless you get clearance from the tower at Laguardia to continue onward through restricted airspace).
Can't go forward, can't turn
leftright, only way out is to make a 180 degree turn towards the buildings. Not strange at all.
And if you had simply listened to any of the news reports rather than making baseless suppositions, you would know that.
