It seems quite a few sellers have special transfer sheets for dark textiles. My guess is they come with their own white background so you could use them for printing white letters.

yep, white background. I was sceptical at first, but it works quite well, the colors come out very vibrant. If you only want the white lettering I suppose you could cut out the letters and just iron those on (haven't tried that, might be hard to get them to look right/unwarped)), or just print a black background. Should't take you more than a 1/2 hour: write letters, print, iron-on and voila, custom t-shirt in a flash :D
