After playing BioShock... - by ant

I played Bioshock for a little while and decided that I didn't like it as much as its "spiritual predecessors." Despite how they say it's optional to run and gun, sneak or do whatever, I'll spend my time setting up traps and the like, when all the sudden a splicer spawns in around the corner and mucks everything up.
It just feels like a first person shooter to me.
Speaking of "sneak", can you actually do this in the game? It told me you can hide in the shadows to avoid splicers, however whenever I've tried to do that, it doesn't work. I am using the "quiet footsteps" thing, but that very rarely works either.
Anyway on to SS2. I've started playing it again, and wondering about the psi powers. I've never used them in the game, usually going the hacker route, however I'd like to use psi powers at least some of the time. Is this a viable way to play or will I muck it up trying to use both hacking
and psi?

You can finish the game without spending a single cybmodule or killing anyone yourself. If that's doable, I think pure-psi is very much doable as well. (In fact, a lot of people have done it already...) Best of luck with it though!

TTLG != Looking Glass Studios. We are TTLG. LGS are the ones who made the games.
Oh yes. I apologize :)
The "Studios" part was present in their opening logo when I played the first System Shock, come to think of it. It's just been so long ago (12 years) since I last played it. At least I got the "Looking Glass" part right.

Bioshock is a great game in its own right... but it's hard to trump Shodan and her machine minions.
I guess it's also a matter of preference of setting, and depth of gameplay.
Bioshock feels like a leaner System Shock 2 with all the fat and trimmings cut off, and reseasoned a bit.
It's actually less of a meal, but it's still pretty damn good; just that some people like the extra bits or prefer the old seasoning. ;)
SHODAN is great, but I really like the villians of Bioshock. Especially the "big reveal"... of course it's like the big SHODAN reveal, but that made it even better.
Yes, Bioshock is trimmed down... I'm wondering if we can do something about that. Maybe we can add depth/fun to the hacking, and add stuff like a GamePIG (call it the 'GameSwine' or something). We could spice it up quite a bit for those of us who like a little more depth. All this can only happen once we have mod support (of course).

As someone who actually completed the game, I can tell you that there are different optional playing styles. Using a trapping style can be hard yes because of the spawning and messing up your plan thing, but you can still use it if you are clever about it and most of the other play styles work even better.
I for example was a wrench player early game, towards the middle I switched to making the enemies fight each other more than me, and nearer to the end I used a stealthy approach and enemy avoidance to just escape and not fight at all.

Yes you can sneak. Most of the stealth techniques won't stop a Splicer from finding you if they're right on top of you, but it can delay their reactions to you, for example if you're hiding in a room and a Splicer walks by, they may not see you at all or may take longer to react to you. Just like they can still find you when you have Chameleon Tonic and are standing perfectly still, if they happen to get close enough to you, but sometimes it takes them longer to figure it out.
"happen to get close to you" might mean "ran into you" because I just tested it again, it's hard to say if the Splicer I tested actually knew I was there but there was still a delay between the point where she ran into me and when she actually started attacking. It was hard to even get her to notice me at all in the first place without jumping out and screaming at her, I got as close as I thought I could and let the Chameleon kick in and she just walked away so I had to follow her and try again.
