The point is that subjective or not some of them are so far from perfect it beggars belief. I would go so far as to describe them as hideously obscure turds.
True, but there are very, very few of those in comparison. But maybe I just think that because I'm more culturally literate than you are. ;)
And, regardless, this is the AFI, it's taken for granted that it's going to lean towards cinephiles and industry insiders and not guys in trailer parks eating cheez whiz and crackers. Plus, a lot of them come from movies that A) have stood a test of time, and B) were probably far more popular amongst their contemporaries than they are amongst 28 year old internet nerds. At their best, there are going to be a lot of crossover with today's pop culture, and those are the ones at the top. Otherwise, just because it's not on Mtv or INTERNET, doesn't mean that your parents don't recognize them and quote them regularly.
Which is why bringing up the "average Joe on the street" is such a ridiculous and utter non-sequitur. Nothing says that "50% of people have to recognize it." Just that, as far as their concerned, more people are going to recognize, and more people actually use, these quotes than any others. Yeah, surre there are stinkers, but do you honestly think that 101-200 are going to have any better?

Why are you repeating this again? I couldn't agree more.
Then why are you bothering in the first place?

Or maybe half the AFI's aged contemporaries are dead, no-one says that shit any more and it's been in and dropped out of our mainstream cultural vocabulary (however you might define that arbitrary term).

My broad yardstick which you're fixated on did. Let go!

Whilst certain quotes are undeniably part of our culture, (including your Godfather quote) regardless of who the list is aimed at, be it Joe Soap, AFI's film cronies or Skippy the Bush Kangaroo - some of them still strike me as very, very left of centre even for someone as cultured and unfamiliar with lunix distributions as myself.

Well, then, welcome to page 1.
Why exactly are you still yapping about this in connection with the Godfather quotes?

NO-ONE ELSE WANTS TO TELL JEAN PICKER FIRSTENBERG TO FUCK OFF WITH HER STUPID SMUG AFI LIST AS MUCH AS I DO.
