Hi. I'm playing my first game of Morrowind, and...I need help. I'm a Dunmer Mage. I've joined the giuld in Balmora, and done a few piddling quests (The mushroom and flower collecting, etc). Levelling up is extremely slow, but then again, I guess that's to be expected with a mage.
Right now, I just need advice. What's the best way for me to level up quicker? What should a n00b like me be doing in Vvardenfall right now? Any bits I really should avoid? And about mages...I'm totally unfamiliar with the system of spells and casting...do new spells come automatically when levelling up as in Neverwinter Nights? Do I need to buy new ones, and do they come in levels of power? Could I, for example, cast a very powerful spell as a level 1 mage if I had theoretically enough Magicka or intelligence?
Any help you guys can give would be cool :)

I'm currently on my third character (but my first mage) and they do seem to level up slower than other characters. There are others probably more experienced than I but I'll try to answer some of your questions.:)
Obviously just going out and adventuring and casting spells will help you level up, a cheap way to bump up a given school of spellcasting is to have a spellmaker create a spell for you from that school and make it really cheap like a fireball that uses 1 point of mana to cast and only does one point of damage and cast it over and over.
This can get boring though.:bored:
You can also level up in spells by getting training from other guild members and other people, but this will cost you for every level of training you get so you'll need money for that.
As a noob I'd stick to the southern half of the map, going up into blight country can get nasty for the unprepared.
You get new spells by buying them from various mages, some also can create totally new spells for you as mentioned before. There are no hard level restrictions on spells but the better you are at a certain school then the better you will be able to cast that spell, however you need to practice that spell specificly as well to get really good at it.

Someone suggested that you get a mage to make you a low level spell for practising. This is a good idea; get one made for every school of magic and practise before you go to sleep (in an inn or outside, then sleep, then repeat, ad infinitum if you wish. It IS boring, but it works). But note that the spellmaking mages only offer effects contained in the spells you already know. So if you want, say, to make a practice fireball, you must first know (i. e. purchase) a fireball spell. Buy all the spell effects you can, for use later. The same goes for enchanting; you must know a spell effect before you can apply it to an item.
Also, if you make a practice conjuration spell, make it something other than a bound weapon. You'll soon see why if you try.

Though it can get a little boring, you can just go hunting for hackle jo leaves (worth twenty drakes) and do some pearl diving for a day. If you accumulate a lot of money after sales, go see a master trainer and get trained a lot - that'll bring up your levels fast - especially if you cast spell after spell repeatedly while you're diving/hunting/running/jumping etc.:thumb:

Yup, Nethawks right on this one (though I was never a huge fan of training - I'm more the fireballs at the wall type :p ) - Hackle ho leaves are really good to get as you'll get at least 20 - the value is 30, so its quick cash. Also, rob any urns that are lying around in the street if you need money to get any training or spell purchasing done.
I find that its slow to get to about level 5 and then they start going up pretty quick.

Cheers guys. I've since got to level 2, and while most people still 0wn me, I managed yesterday to kill two (!!) cliff racers at once. And Caius Cosades was terribly good about the whole sleep in my bed, use my stuff, get cheap training, fire sixty fireballs at my ceiling thing.
Onward!
