I disagree entirely. Due to all the events throughout the series and build up to the ending of Deadly Shadows, Thief IV would be a writer's dream. It is in no way an ending, but more of a climax of the story. You don't stop there. Seriously, what IS going to happen after that. It was an amazing twist and it leaves some great possibilities for the future. Talk of the town? I only remember one character pretending to be Garrett in the city hub, which whoever put that in shouldn't have.

I think the main reasoning for the fake reboot goes as follows:
First team: - Okay let's make Thief 4.
Marketing: - You can't and won't call it Thief 4. A number means that people who haven't played the original games, who are going to be our main audience, will think that there is some catching up to do. You will call it Thief, preferrably without a subtitle hinting at a sequel.
Half of the first team: - Fine by me.
At the same time, other half: - I'm not sure I can work with that. Who is our main audience again?
Second team: - Hi.
Lead designer: - "Thief" is fine. Let's get another writer and see where it goes from there.
New writer: - I want to do my own thing, but I've been asked to keep the iconic elements that might get us some support from the old fans.
New writer, after a while: - Welp, things are not going as planned and it stinks in here. Bye!
Third team: - Hi. We're the leftovers from the previous teams, so we'll give ourselves pretty titles.
Marketing: - Hello, remember us?
"Lead designer": - I know, I know. We'll call it a reboot but you still have to make it happen after the previous games.
"Narrative director": - That's ok, that way I'll use the story and content written by the previous teams as I can't be arsed to write everything from scratch again.

Esme and Briareos H, I think you both have answered my question quite perfectly, haha. I don't think the developers could have answered it better themselves. Seeing it this way makes it easier to play it and enjoy it for what it is. Thanks

That's why I'm afraid that it will become "Garrett's adventures", dragging it on and on and on without any kind of closure. All great stories must come to an end -- if they don't, they become watered down, formulaic and predictable.
For better or worse, Deadly Shadows tied up the story -- Garrett became the uberkeeper, fulfilled his destiny and with the orphan kid the story came full circle. What you could do now is set up a new story about Garrett the uberkeeper and his new protégé, but you can't continue the story of Garrett the practical loner guy.

There was also the fangirl shopkeeper asking for his autograph and the wanted posters everywhere.

How is it dragged on and on? There couldn't possibly be many years that has passed in the story's timeline. Sounds to me like you're bored with it. If the story were to continue as "Thief IV", I can only imagine it going that far. As I said, the ending of Thief 3 was the climax, and endings come very soon after the climax. So what about the child pickpocket full circle bollocks.
That is probably what I would do, continue on with a kind of "new chapter" with Garrett and the protege, without the keepers as a way to finish it. I guess on the surface it seems Garrett's story is done, but the city itself has it's own character and the ending is about what happens next in the city without the existence of the keepers. Looking at the new Thief, it seems they've kind of done that, and it makes sense with the story being centered around the baron and the uprising, since the keepers are gone and can no longer keep the balance.

Briareos & Esme nailed it.

It is pretty likely to happen, if you start making game after game with the same character. That was what I was talking about.
Anyway, my point was that it's not so easy as you make it out to be.
* You can't go back to the same character, because Garrett has changed during the story from "leave me alone" to "tell me more" to "I want to fulfill my destiny". This makes it pretty difficult to keep the filmnoirish aspects of the franchise.
* You have to take into account Garrett's new abilities. How do you balance the role as an uberkeeper with thieving?
* You have to consider the orphan child. Writing about children has its own pitfalls.

This sounds more like the beginning of a new story and less like the continuation of the old one. It would be about Garrett the uberkeeper and not about Garrett the master thief.

Hmm, I get your point. The story may have changed enough to impact on the fundamental gameplay. I think it might work if the writer is creative enough, he can still be mostly a Thief but also the keeper when he has no other choice. In a weird way, some of the story in the new Thief is similar to this scenario.

If they were true fans they would've played the games when they came out.
A lot of the target audience for T4 would have been in nappies 15 years ago

THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN'T HAVE PLAYED THIEF.
