So you're saying TDS never locked you into "lockpicking mode" and the new one is the devil for doing it?
No Mr. Strawman, I never said that TDS did things better. It was a mistake to have a static lockpicking mode in TDS, and instead of correcting that mistake by creating a better system, EM decided to repeat the mistake. Thief 4 isn't "the devil" for doing that. It just isn't good.

The last time we did that we got Zero Mission. No thanks. Let someone else fill the Metroidvania void.
What was wrong with Zero Mission? And I have yet to play a decent 2D Metroidvania game that didn't include either Metroid or vania in the title.

Unless you'd like to go back to spamming lockpicks against locked items until they open, there's not going to be any control method that doesn't involve "lockpicking mode"

Zero Mission was insultingly linear and hand-holdy, even more than Fusion which didn't have a shitty finale either.
Also, go play Cave Story already.

All Metroid games are insanely linear, all Fusion and Zero Mission did differently was tell you where to go to further advance the storyline. They still had tons and tons of platformer goodness and some very difficult to obtain hidden items. The façade of old school Metroidvania games was "open world* *except the parts you can't get to because you don't have the _____ item" and that was pretty much in tact in Fusion/Zero Mission, they just added the "go here in case you forgot you couldn't get through there earlier, and that's what corresponds to the upgrade you just got" hand-holding notifications.
I have played Cave Story. I wasn't a big fan of it.

I'm sorry, I don't think we can be friends.

I finished Cave Story. I just wouldn't put it on par with Metroid or Castlevania.

Yeah, obviously the only possible alternative to a restrictive activated mode is "hold down button until door opens".

If you're so damn smart then why don't you tell the class what an alternative might be.

The TDM version.
