Can you imagine talking to a girl/boy/chirpse-target(whatever) at a party and telling them you got genuinely upset during an argument about perspective in computer games? This argument is lamer than lame.
This post is lame. First of all, its highly unlikely we're gonna talk about this at a party. Second, this is a discussion and if you can't take a little heat during a discussion theres no point in saying anything. These are the sort of discussions I have all the time while doing my game design degree. How could it possibly be lame when these discussions will eventually lead to a career in gaming?
Also, we need to properly define the sort of immersion we're talking about. The music in a game can be immersive. But what we're talking about is immersion within the body of the character your playing.

The tedious bickering is boring the pants off everyone. You are continuing to ignore requests to stop so please note the following:

Yeah yeah yeah. Its not heat or whatever though, its getting angry about other people's choice of virtual perspective. Its a waste of being-alive-time. Some people prefer different projections, this is a subjective choice, loudly restating your own preferences achieves nothing. I mean I don't like third-person so much, but I know other people do, and that's about all I find it possible to say on the matter.

This subject can definately be discussed in depth within a design point of view. Though, not when its opinion vs opinion. I personally try to keep all posts relevant to the topic, as its awkward and embarassing deleting/editing posts and each posts could be searched through your profile. I have made a few posts recently back on the topic of Thief 4, but its surprising that the replies are in response to something "stupid" someone has said. I challenge the next person to post to make it about Thief. I don't wanna see nickie lock this thread.

Opinion vs opinion is not a problem. Arguing is not a problem. Wandering off the subject is not a problem. Having a laugh is not a problem.
What is a problem is very clearly set out in the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141053) Forum Behaviour thread.
The next option of choice won't be closing the thread but, as I posted earlier, preventing those who insist on ignoring those rules from posting. And, just to be clear, closing threads and barring people from posting in this forum is pretty much always done with moderator consensus.
I'd also remind new people and those who might have forgotten that there is a 'report post' option here.

Got it. Let's go all over the place with our posts, but just don't be personally offensive. Simple :thumb:. Well then, rather than let's get back.to the topic, let's get back to all the tangents. Who cares, as long as there is posts and we're all cool

I guess immersion can be achieved in both 1st and 3rd person perspectives depending on what level of control over the player character and interactivity with the world. Thief was very immersive because you could creep, walk, run, crouch, slide, lean left, right, and forward, jump, mount ledges, swing a sword left and right, heavu hits, block, and so on. Thats just control over the player character. The list would probably be longer for interactivity with the world. I don't play thay many 3rd person games, but I can imagine being able to achieve the same level of immersion as Thief if the control and interactivity is done really well. As well as artwork, music, and design that pulls you into a world that's more about a place and time rather than bonuses, achievements, and upgrades.

I don't know if the term "immersion" by itself is the most useful way to explain it; since it's hard to define it very precisely and opinions vary. But IMO there is a definite difference in how 1P and 3P gameplay *feels*, whatever term you use for it. 3P is more abstracted from the action, more like a boardgame and you're sitting above your piece moving it around, whereas 1P is *you* in the world moving yourself around. And they're fun (or flop) in their own different way, characteristic with that feel. Actually I think it's a bit more complicated than that, where some mechanics are more abstracted and some are more concrete and you'd really go mechanic by mechanic if you were being precise about it, but that gets to the gist of it.
The point is, I don't think one is necessarily better or worse than the other, just they feel different, and sometimes you're in the mood for one type of action, and other times for the other. The first time I played Thief back in 1998, I actually wanted it to be 3P because I'd just played Tomb Raider and wanted to move the PC like that. But having played Thief for a long time now, my gut reaction is wanting it to be 1P, because that's what gets me into the movement and gameplay. While I think everybody has a similar sense of the difference in feel, it's still a pretty subjective thing whether one gets into it or not TBH, I think.

*wishes 1) that there was an "Agree" button and 2) that everyone here approached these conversations as reasonably as dema in the post above*
