Yeah, there is something nice about 1st person but there are plenty of 3rd person games that are plenty immersive.

I've been more immersed by Dark Souls than I ever was with Thief. Your argument is invalid.
My argument is my opinion. You're just obsessed with Dark Souls and refuse to remember what it was like playing Thief back in the day. Dark Souls more immersive? Come on. You can't tell me when you're playing the game, it doesn't feel like you're just controlling your little warrior (what did you name him, btw?), running him around all those dungeons and castles, making him fight all the bad guys for you. It's fun, but it doesn't feel like
you're the one doing it personally, does it?
There's no way any 3rd person perspective can give you same feel of being there as first person can. Just not possible, IMO.

My argument is my opinion, and here's a whole paragraph explaining why it's fact.
Fixed that for you. You're still wrong. Aside from the fact that I haven't even played Dark Souls since July so therefore hardly an obsession (nevermind that this
entire subforum is dedicated to Thief obsession, so pot-to-kettle, you chuffing hypocrite) I can't even begin to tell you how flat-out
terrified, and elated, and amazed, and awestruck I was at parts of the game when I was first playing about a year ago, in ways Thief never managed. If that isn't being more immersive than your precious sacred cow then I don't know what is. So yes, it's possible, and yes, I can and I will tell you that when I'm playing DS, I'm far more immersed than I ever was in Thief.
(I named her Romy btw, and her class is
Wanderer thank you very much)

I can be engrossed by a 3rd-person game, but I wouldn't say I am immersed no matter how focused I am while playing it or how interesting the world or the gameplay. For me there's an extra layer of suspension of disbelief I'd need to cross to be immersed in a 3rd-person game, and personally, it's one layer too many. I don't deny that some people can probably do it though.

Not really bro. That's his view on it and if just one person feels really immersed by a third person game who are we to argue. Fwiw I've not found anything quite as immersive as Thief 1 and 2, and part of that is definitely the 1st person view (the movement is just as important to me though - Dishonored wasn't quite as immersive but it was getting there), but I did totally get into Shadow of The Colossus, The Last of Us and many other 3rd person games.

What's silly here is pretending that immersion is a clearly defined criterion and can be measured with a modicum of objectivity. It isn't. Pretending that it is, or that it could be clearly defined in a way that everyone agrees with and that is relevant to the discussion, makes it very difficult to have a reasonable discussion. As it is, we're stuck with "Well, I need a game to be exclusively first person for it to be immersive!" "Well,
I found
Ultima VII/
Dark Souls/
Candy *&%$#@! Crush plenty immersive, thank you!"

Can you imagine talking to a girl/boy/chirpse-target(whatever) at a party and telling them you got genuinely upset during an argument about perspective in computer games? This argument is lamer than lame.

Well if my opinions about perspectives in games isn't gonna seal the deal with the ladies then I'm outta ideas!

Look at Vivian all upset about not being invited to the big kids' table over here.
