I do not expect it to hold a candle to the first two games, but I think I might like it as much as the third game.
I couldnt have said it better myself.

Has anyone thought that the clock tower may have been rebuilt? Yeah, makes total sense for the people of the city to just leave it there in ruins. The city is an ever expanding place with lots of construction workers and Hammerites. And obviously there has been enough time between games to have rebuilt it.
When you take a closer look at what is present in the game and have a better understanding of what actually happened in the development process, it becomes clear. This is most definately a sequel/reboot hybrid. It makes me somewhat happy that this is a mix between a sequel and a reboot. I wouldn't be very happy if it was just a reboot, and it would be an absolute miracle if it were a pure sequel, so we just can't expect that.

Garrett hasn't lost his eye, and the clocktower hasn't been destroyed. There is no continuity.
Haven't you noticed the focus ability? Garrett still has one weird f*&#ing eye. After the events of Deadly Shadows, Garrett has become the master Keeper. It makes sense to me that his eye is no longer mechanical, but has been transformed by his Keeper abilities into magical. Even though the eye has a different origin within this story, the eye has been continued from the originals. They could have made focus any other way, they didn't need to use the eye.

Most unlikely. Why would the rebuilt tower be abandoned already?

Because people think it's haunted. That's the explanation given in T4. Together with the gloom, this isn't even the weakest justification in a fantasy computer game.

Except this Garrett wasn't trained by keepers, but learned thieving in the streets after escaping the orphanage where he grew up. Also, he is not a master keeper of anything -- while robbing an opium den/bordello, he stumbles upon an artifact that gives him opium-powered abilities such as faster reflexes. Or at least something like that, if I remember correctly.

That's right...It's a different origin story, for a different person they also call "Garrett" (for brand recognition purposes)...Who lives in a different universe, with a literally different cosmology.
Plus, EM has already stated that this is a reinvention of the franchise and not a sequel, on multiple occasions...so all of this is plainly clear on multiple levels.

Yeah yeah. Garrett has lost a year and then some. At the end it'll be revealed he was working for the Keepers all along but didn't know it and had his memories of them erased as a precaution or something.

It does seem likely that the Keepers will be involved in the story somehow, with Garrett finding a weird artifact in a mission that takes place in their old library. It has to be more than just a nod to the fans. If they just wanted to use a familiar location, why not one that the fans would be more excited about? I didn't find the Keeper library very memorable.

But if it's a sequel like you've been stating, then the Keepers would be gone.
Why such resistance to just admitting it's a complete reboot?

You really can't think outside the box, can you?
If it's a reboot-sequel then the Keepers can be anything they want. Hiding? Come in from a chapter that was in another city? Been in suspended animation? Never actually left but let him believe they did because they wanted to melt back into the shadows?
Any of this could happen. I'd be surprised if they weren't in it somewhere simply because Garrett has glyphs on his gloves.
