I appreciate the comments in this thread. I hadn't really considered the argument that since we pay for our bandwidth, we reserve the right to prevent it being wasted by downloading ads. But the problem with that is that small website might get caught in the crossfire.
For now I'm only blocking ads on sites whose owners should have plenty of money from elsewhere. E.g. shopping websites get their money from people buying things, so ads on their sites get blocked. The same goes for sites owned by TV broadcasters, since they get plenty of revenue from TV advertising. In contrast, a site run by volunteers can keep showing ads as long as they don't interfere.

I just use no script, so anything not from the domain I am visiting is blocked. This is mainly for security, since a lot of exploits are being propagated by external scripts (often paid for through advertisers!)
Websites can still do their own adds / sponsored by etc as long as it doesn't use external scripts. Flash adds can go die in a fire.

I don't use any ad blockers either. As long as you go clicking through a bunch of porn sites you should be fine. I get the occasional netflix popup or something else but other than that, I"m thoroughly shocked at how ad free my browsing typically is.

Not using Ad blockers? Not happening. I don't give two shits about your revenue streams, only my surfing experiences. Similarly I use Fastererfox to prefetch pages, with the thrash option enabled.

The latter starts with an acknowledgment. "Yes, we have inundated the internet with our shitty business model, spyware, datamining, and other nonsense. We were greedy and stupid. We're sorry and we want to work things out, and we want to earn your trust."
Then the other side has to acknowledge something. "Yes, we know that if we want good content, we'll either have to pay for it, or watch a few ads."

I can't see any other possible way for the cycle to continue now that people have the power to strangle the hell out of the model
