Actually, after Seeing the gameplay video, do you think you will buy 'Thief' ? - by sterlino

Of course it must be tried...it's the right genre and they didn't do a bad job with the latest Deus Ex. I won't except a masterpiece but I also know that I'm harder to please these days.

It's not going to be like any of the Thief games we know and love, but there will be enough thiefyness in there to warrant a purchase. I'll be getting it on day one.
And I think most people here who say they aren't are just full of shit. ;)
Agreed.
I can't vote in the poll (I don't know why; I'm logged in, obviously); but I'd vote #2.
(Well, technically, no I won't be getting it on day one, but only because I don't have a computer capable of running it. But as soon as I can.)
I dislike the fog/shroud. I don't understand why the light gem by itself doesn't fulfill the need to determine detection level. I don't like having my own (human) vision partially obscured, either. I'd find it distracting and uncomfortable. I haven't been reading up on the news, and I'm only reacting to the E3 demo video, so take my comments with a grain of salt if you can. I may simply be under-informed.
I imagine there's least one mega-thread here about the crippled rope arrow, so I probably don't even need to say anything.
Schmidt calls it a reinventon and not a prequel or a sequel in any way. If I can force myself to remember that, I'll give it a go. I'm not to say I'm not squirming inside at some of the changes. Heck, I'm still trying to cope with the idea that a movie, any movie, that's an adaptation of a beloved book is going to be fan fiction and not an accurate visual representation of the book. I still have to remind myself of that in order to enjoy a movie adaptation.
I don't like the swoop. Part of the fun for me was thinking "Can I slip back in the shadow before the guard I just relieved of his purse turns around?" I could already dart from shadow to shadow just by running, then returning to stealth mode immediately. Maybe that doesn't work on really high difficulty; I wouldn't know ;). I just don't want to magically zoom from cover to cover. Like most of my other concerns, I'm content to wait and see. Besides, it may be one of the features you can toggle off.
I don't understand the need for xp at all.
The interviewer asked, in a roundabout and sloppy way, about the thieves' highway, and I never heard a definitive answer. I'm fearful.

A couple of years ago (I think), anyone who hadn't visited the forums for a long time was sent an email. If the email wasn't replied to, then that user was placed in a 'holding pen'. I've moved you to 'Members' so you should be able to vote now.

I had my share of doubts, mixed with some positivity when I was first hearing about certain things in the game. Focus mode and certain character changes to Garrett bothered me for sure, but I still had somewhat of a positive outlook.
After finally seeming some gameplay though, I'm kind of leaning off of one side of the fence, rather than really sitting on it. Garrett's nosferatu hand movements while crouching is certainly something that needs to go to the birds, and that dumb glaucoma he has seemed to develop irks me as well. Maybe add an actual jump button, and have the swoop dash be noisy as opposed to a silent movement, and that'll make me feel a bit better. I also have to know a little more about how the plot is going to be delivered, and their approach to building on the lore.

I must say i was pleasantly surprised by the gameplay videos. Even though it is surely different than Thief1/2/3, the sneak/stealth feeling is definetely there, and they seemed to have added some nice features and ideas to it. The visuals i found overkill at first glance, but i guess one has to accept that they add many visual effects nowadays... after a while you'll get used to it i guess.
So, yeah, i'll check it out, but as many, need a hardware upgrade first. :D

'and their approach to building on the lore'. EM's pretty much shown that the old Thief 'lore' went right out the window with their reboot; they won't be 'building on the lore' as much as inventing NuLore of their own. NuGarrett's eye is not mechanical anymore; in fact they inferred that they had (or were making up) a story to go along with that fact in NuThief. The old factions that we knew in the Thief lore won't be active factions in T4, though EM is paying lip-service to some of them. Oh wait: the game is called 'Thief', the main protagonist is named 'Garrett', and NuGarrett fights the 'City Watch' which is controlled by an evil 'Baron'. Aside from that and the fact that EM is using some of the old names from the original Thief games, that's about as much into the 'lore' that EM will be delving. And no, I don't think naming a bird in the game 'Jenivere' is funny or a thoughtful insight into the Thief lore.
Otherwise, the 'lore' is whatever EM chooses it to be, and has not a damned thing to do with the real Garrett or the world of Thief that we all know and love. It's a reboot, not a sequel.
I'm not directing my bitterness and disappointment directly towards you SlySpy; just sayin', is all. EM has invented a NuGame that has very little to do with the Thief saga we know.
'after a while you'll get used to it i guess'. Or not. You don't have to accept it. I think perhaps if EM really IS listening (that's a mighty big 'IF', too) and they get the messages from those of us who are not happy with what they're doing to T4, even if they're not actively paying attention now they may if the game flops miserably. Or - EM will just continue to make crap like T4. A game that's stolen the name of another game and its protagonist and that can't decide if it wants to be just like Mirror's Edge, Dishonored, DX:HR, and/or Assassin's Creed.

I have heard that the old factions won't be in this next one, which does sound pretty ridiculous. The fact that the Baron plays a role in this game could be a good sign though; it does bring forward the small possibility that maybe they'll be able to build on some other facets of the lore. I don't get why the Keepers wouldn't exist in some form; I know it's meant to be a reboot, but the Keepers are an aspect of Garrett's character that I don't think can be avoided without botching the lore somehow.
Could you provide me with proof of Garrett's glowing eye not being mechanical this time around? Not that I don't believe you, but that's serious enough that I want to be able to confirm it for myself. It's weird that they talked up Garrett being this amazingly iconic character they had to bring back as the protagonist, and yet his voice, his personality/motivations, and even his mechanical replacement eye are inconsistent with this character that they supposedly loved enough to bring back. He also has developed a schnoz, but I guess that's trivial by comparison, haha.
Lastly, you didn't need to put the disclaimer of not being bitter toward me. It wasn't hard to be able to tell that you were strictly talking about the game.

Thanks Brethren; I couldn't find that post to reference. :thumb:

EM has made it pretty clear that they're revamping the whole 'Thief lore' thing to suit
their reboot. I think the Baron in T4 sounds pretty generic and from what I've read/seen/heard about T4, it's debatable as to whether EM is building 'on some other facets of the lore' or (as I said previously) just inventing NuLore to suit their NuGame. I wouldn't expect any references to the Keepers, Hammerites, Mechanists, etc., to be more than passing in T4. I still think that EM's naming a bird 'Jenivere' and using a few old, familiar names from the original Thief games is about as in-depth reference to the old lore that we're gonna get. And yeah; imo EM's already botched things with T4.
Some Taffers here keep insisting that EM is staying true to the core elements of the original Thief games by dubbing T4 as a 'stealth' game. So then how come IGN gave honorable mention to T4 in their E3 'Best
Action Game' category? If I wanted to play an action game I'd just load up DX:HR. Again. I'm surprised that I'm surprised that T4 is already being considered more an action than stealth game.
