It's a basic fact, and has been for a long time, that you can't have a gaming PC that isn't attached to the internet at least some of the time.
And that is why I spend 99% of my money on DRM free games and game projects (GOG, Desura, Kickstarter, Indiegogo). While the metrics driven AAA industry pops out one cinematic streamlined next-gen game after another, I'm getting what I want from the indies.
Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Transistor, Project Eternity, Shadowrun, Torment, A Machine for Pigs, Grimrock 2, Asylum, Dead State, Wasteland 2, all the old school adventure games... There's a ton of games for the likes of me coming out.
My offline gaming PC will not be gathering dust any time soon.

Correct, Vivian. One of many things many veteran Thief players and LGS devotees hate about modern gaming. These things add up, compound, and drive disillusionment, drive the underprivileged out of the market they always found some joy in, and at some point, should not surprise the blessed Many to hear statements like "I won't be able to play Thief[4]."
I'll state it again, there are more of us than most of you know, who are now shut out of gaming that isn't on a hard medium we can completely control. Even ald games that required Internet allowed printing out a registration form instead of forcing the 'Net, or provided a backdoor. To buy a copy of the software, have a machine that can run it, and have no way to legally play it, is f***in' stupid and needless.

you'll probably find physical copies in your Wallmart, Tesco or HMV (if it's not dead yet) equivalent, but you'll see this type of notice on back cover:
Finally.
No thanks...

Well, let's make the fairly sensible assumption this is going to require steam. That's fine. Download it or install it, activate it, go into offline mode, done.
It's not that simple. My mom lives in rural Mississippi with no internet. I've tried activating her games on her pc here through her Steam account & having her play offline once back home. This has not been successful. I begin to think offline mode is a myth. I finally got her to buy an Xbox so she can play modern games.

Well, this was a fun argument when HL2 came out. Basically, that's how it is. Boo hoo hoo, there is a very small chance someone might cut off access to my games, so I'm not going to buy them at all. Have fun with that.
Isn't Grimrock 2 download only?
I've used offline mode extensively when working abroad or in weird field stations where a network is something that stops the gators getting into the carpark. It works fine. You have to be online to turn it on, so if you forget to do it when you still have a connection you are screwed, but otherwise it's fine.
Or yeah, get an xbox, problem solved.

Have they finally gotten around to allowing offline mode without going online first? That would be amazing! I could breathe a sigh of relief that Valve finally came to their senses!
Otherwise I wanna know why it's supposed to be easy peasy to go online with no Internet at all. All the Steam lovers think it's physically possible.

What? No. You have to be online to activate offline mode. Straw man says hi by the way.

Yup, you just pop in the disc and play, internet or not. Don't forget to switch off the notifications though ;)

How are you talking to us right now?

Well, unfortunately for *that* little theory of yours, can I also attach a mouse/keyboard to the console and it least enjoy it like a normal Thief title?
