No, because its not 1998 and your local gaming store has shut down because no one has bought physical copies of pc games since 2005.
:laff: That's exactly it. It's not really question of "latest rave" or "catering to the masses". It's a standard, a bloody norm. A game
won't be released without it. I'm not huge fan of those, but flailing your arms in anger about it will provoke more or less the same reaction as if you were raging about people using iPhones during concerts instead of lighters or candles, "like in the old days". Everyone would be looking at you with "how-long-you've-been-trapped-in-that-cave?" expression on their faces. No point in wasting your breath, you'll just turn that option off and forget about it.

I am so confused! Turn the option off in game, yeah, I get it. Turn off the option to play the game if you dont have an internet connection on your gaming comuter? Are you telling me that there will be *no* hardcopies of Thief IV being sold?

These WebTaffers never follow the rules of reading.
Any Single Point is too hard to understand to the privileged! Imagine not having Internet for the gaming system, Judith.

That shouldn't matter, after downloading the game on Steam you can play it in offline mode, if you want to, or if you don't have the internet connection at the moment. You'll still see the achievements if you don't turn them off.
Once you get connected again, your achievements will be added to your online Steam profile, that's it. But they don't require
persistent internet connection, that's a different (bad!) thing, used by some publishers as a DRM measure (Ubisoft and lately EA).

Okay, there ya have it folks. Judith just confirmed that there will be no hard copies of Thief IV!

It's a basic fact, and has been for a long time, that you can't have a gaming PC that isn't attached to the internet at least some of the time. Unless you only play games from before that was a requirement, which is prior to around 2005ish. Perma-online is super dumb and thankfully pretty rare and universally hated when it is present (hello, Sim City), but online activation is pretty much universal. If you don't know this, you haven't been paying any attention to recent (sort of recent) developments.
Goldmoon, I am sure you can drag yourself down to Tescos or wherever and dredge up a hardcopy to play on your mysterious non-internet gaming thing that is obviously not the same one you use to drool inanities into this forum. But, and this is a 100% certainty, you will need at least some form of internet connection at some point to play it. Welcome to the bloody future.

I've got no problem with on line activation, as long as I never need to connect again in order to play the game, as for uploading any achievements - not interested.
Vivian on 30/3/2013 at 16:48
Well, let's make the fairly sensible assumption this is going to require steam. That's fine. Download it or install it, activate it, go into offline mode, done.

I'm kinda curious where exactly you've found that in my posts. As Vivian says, you'll probably find physical copies in your Wallmart, Tesco or HMV (if it's not dead yet) equivalent, but you'll see this type of notice on back cover:
