Just because a bunch of people believe in some silly unfounded bunk doesn't mean it's not silly unfounded bunk. See: religion.

Or Wizardry.
Sad thing is I'm actually really interested in the psychology and mechanics of gaming, especially as it relates to learning and reward.

Yes, you are. Forget it, Goldie, I've known 8 year olds who debate better than you. Go back to bed.

Association fallacy.
I can play all night.
Look, the broad gist that achievements are a poor second fiddle to in-game mastery as a reward mechanism or that achievements could become a crutch for developers and designers looking for shortcuts is entirely plausible.
Sure, you could demand some punitive standard of evidence. But we both know you couldn't match the same standards either and it'd amount to special pleading. So why not humour the guy, why not go for empirical falsification? The motion stands until someone shows it false or a better explanation comes along.

Uh... peace? I'm not really looking for an argument, montypythonesque or otherwise. I just wanted to call attention to an issue that is important for me.
Maybe I'm not too clear, you'd have to forgive me that, as English is not my first or even my second language, so I might not use the best/most precise words or be able to explain things very eloquently, but do listen to/watch the talk, if you want to find out more about it.
Just for convenience, here it is once more: (
