Acess denied? Cannot edit Thief folder....Please help, I am stuck. - by Thief2

Everytime I die on thief 2, I get the black screen, and the Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage error. So I end up having to restart from the desktop.
Anyways I have a nivida card, looked it up and it said to try the quote below.
"Thief 2 users can simply place the line safe_texture_manager into their user.cfg file, which works reliably to fix this problem"
Is there a better solution or is this the best one??
Evertime I try the above, it says "acess denied"..... I am the admin on my pc so I Do not understand how to fix this, even when I try to install the fan man patches it says access denied......
I tried the things on this site http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/windows-7-access-denied-permission-ownership/ and it still didnt work, I am on windows xp.
I do not know much about computers at all, and I am at all complete loss can anyone give me any tips I miss thief )=....

On Windows XP I would expect the most common reason you can't edit that file is either due to user permissions or because a process has the file locked.
Have you tried editing the file immediately after starting Windows - or tried editing it in safe mode?

Are you sure the folder isn't read-only?

Hey there thankyou for the reply =).
Yes the folder is "read only" I try to change it but that is when the acess denied thing comes up.

Okay that narrows things down a bit.
What you need to do is take ownership of that folder. Here's how: (

What version of Thief 2 is this anyway? GoG.com or a disc copy?

Thankyou agian for your time, I did everything on the link you gave me but it still wont work.. I have a CD copy its the one with the newest patch already installed.
I noticed that when I click start and then explore, and find thief, it said that all the files "includiing the one I want to change" are on the CD.. It doesnt say that with Thief one.
I did the normal install so I am not sure why it would be differnt.
I tried to copy all the thief folders to the desktop but when I click on the thief application from that folder it says thief 2 has encountered and error and must close etc.

Are you
sure you followed those instructions to the letter? The whole situation here is with Windows not allowing you to alter the Thief 2 install folder for some reason.
There's a number of re-releases of Thief 2 on disc, which version is this? Like, the Sold Out Software version, maybe?
You may also want to consider bypassing the problem entirely by shelling out the 10 bucks for the (
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/thief_2_the_metal_age) GoG.com version.
Are you having problems with other folders? You mentioned "any other game folder" -- I'm assuming you have everything installed under C:/Games/ or something similar? If several folders are being locked out to you, that's not normal behaviour and you should consider running your anti-virus.

Are you trying to change the config file on your CD? That obviously won't work - you need to change it in the directory you installed the game into.
