hey im about to play SS2 when I get back from school and just looking at how scared some people are of this game considering how dated it is makes me wicked pumped. I couldn't help but notice that there are some recommended things to download before i play like shtup and stuff, any advice is appreciated.

It's generally accepted that you should play without any mods whatsoever first run. Just to experience the game as it was made.

Except perhaps SHTUP, as it's 'just' a resolution increasing mod, thus preserving the original mood.

Yeah, limit the mods to SHTUP on the first runthrough.
And I assume you made sure the game will run without issues?

Second time through, you should try Straylight's mod (changes a lot of things and makes bits of the game more logical) and Rebirth, though the latter can change the 'feel' of the game, because it changes most of the models of the (dead) crew members and enemies you fight.

Alright I got the game working with the SHTUP. So far I've been going around the the first lab level with the zombies and stuff so far game hasn't really been too scary which sorta bums me out. The sound in general is great though. Security cameras are pretty frustrating too just having the same two zombies sent to attack ya over and over till it goes off. I really wish I could get into this game a bit more :erg:

You can take out those cameras or potentially stop them working for a while, by the way.

Yea i know you can do that but if the alarm goes off regardless it seems like its just better to reload if the game has been saved recently.

The first level is pretty tame, compared to what awaits you. It starts to pick up once you hit the Engineering deck.

No way, that takes the fun out of it! If you try and only play perfectly (using reloads and so on) it is less realistic. In real life people make mistakes, have setbacks, run out of ammo and so on. When the alarms go off I really enjoy the hiding, or attempting to disable the alarm. If I run out of ammo or get badly injured I just limp on and deal with it - which gives an amazing survival horror feel. There are very few points in the game (if any) where even with setbacks you couldn't get any further.
I would suggest that it is the style of play where you reload every time something doesn't work out that prevents immersion and removes the fear. What is there to fear when it all works out perfectly?
Try only reloading when you die (without activating a bioreconstruction device). Just play it. If you choose an upgrade you don't like, just play on with it - choose a different one next time you play. I read posts where people ask what upgrades to choose in their first playthrough - but it doesn't matter. I make the choices that seem best to the type of character I am playing that game, whether or not they give me the best value. The result is that I am always totally immersed in the game, and love it.
